I suspect that in the coming months there will be many more notices like
the one below. It is not just the losses in current year acquisitions,
but collection gaps in the long term that may be problematic.
When I was at Library school in Manchester in the 1960s I remember a
discussion about the effects of the Great Depression on libraries.
As disposable income disappeared there was a surge in public demand.
Acquisitions in some areas were more or less abandoned. Poetry was one
subject deemed rather less essential at the time, and a librarian in
special collections remarked that they were still trying to plug the gaps
left by that decade of missing titles.
