LIBRARY RESEARCH FELLOW PRESENTATION
“The Greek Genocide: Pontus and Smyrna and the Resettlement of Asia Minor Refugees
1916-1925”
The Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection invites you to join us for a lecture by 2014-2015
Library Research Fellow
Stavros Stavridis, Historical Consultant and Independent Scholar, Melbourne, Australia.
Summary:
"This talk will investigate the Greek Genocide during the period 1916-25 with
emphasis on two geographic regions of Asia Minor: Pontus and Smyrna. These two places
contained large Greek populations who lived there for nearly 3000 years with many of them
massacred by the Ottoman Government and Turkish nationalists. In the end, many were
uprooted never to return to their ancestral homelands. Greece faced a massive influx of
refugees in the aftermath of the Greek-Turkish 1919-22 that would require massive
international assistance."
