Greek Publishing House in Istanbul’s Next Book
By Christina Flora on October 22, 2012 In Culture, Turkey
Istos, the first Greek publishing house in Istanbul in 50 years, begun
by a group of seven Greeks and Turks, has released a new Greek
language novel,
Postponements and Descents (Anavoles kai Katiforoi,)
A review appeared in the Radikal newspaper on Oct. 13.
The novel, translated from Turkish by Tim Drayton, is the story of two
people from the 1964 generation, Dimitris and Giorgios, who were
thrown out thrown out as part of by the Turkish government of many
Greeks. It was seen as a move involving the crisis in Cyprus.
It is about remaining rootless, being unable to settle in, not being
‘local’ and the inability to feel at home. The two, destined to remain
foreign wherever they go, appear to lead suspended lives thanks to
decisions which are postponed. Their lives, full of indecision, take
them willy-nilly on an ever downward descent.
Istos said it wants to publish more Greek language books to support
the growing demand in Turkey to learn Greek. Its first book by an
Istanbul Greek, Dositheos Anagnostopoulos, the Orthodox Patriarchate
spokesman, related to the problems the Greeks of Turkey had to face
upon their arrival in Greece in the 1960′s.
