The American School of Classical Studies at Athens, a non-profit overseas research
institution, is seeking an experienced individual to lead communication efforts for the
School from the U.S. With an administrative base in Princeton, NJ and a campus in Athens,
the American School is the leading American research and teaching institution in Greece,
dedicated to the advanced study of all aspects of Greek culture, from antiquity to the
present.
Founded in 1881, the School is a consortium of more than 185 colleges and universities in
the United States and Canada. It was the first American overseas research center, and
today it is the largest of the foreign institutes in Athens—and the only one that provides
a regular program of instruction to students. The American School offers a pleasant,
energetic environment with dedicated professionals.
POSITION SUMMARY
We are seeking a talented and experienced Communications Director with expertise in
high-level graphic design, preferably with a background in academic or museum settings, to
join our dynamic team in Princeton, NJ. This pivotal role requires exceptional
communication skills, strategic thinking, and a profound understanding of visual
storytelling within an academic or cultural institution setting. The ideal candidate
possesses a blend of outstanding graphic design expertise, superior writing and editing
skills, and a passion for promoting scholarly endeavors.
Responsibilities
Strategic Communications Leadership:
In conjunction with the Executive Director, develop and execute
comprehensive communication strategies that align with the School’s goals, fostering
engagement and advancing its mission.
Oversee the creation and implementation of compelling visual content across various
platforms, ensuring consistency in messaging and branding.
Graphic Design Expertise:
Produce visually stunning and engaging digital assets, publications, and marketing
materials.
Collaborate with department heads in Athens and staff in Princeton to conceptualize and
produce captivating visual narratives that effectively communicate complex academic
concepts.
Content Creation and Editing:
Oversee and assist with production of high-quality written content, including press
releases, newsletters, website copy, and social media posts, demonstrating a deep
understanding of the institution's subject matter.
Edit and refine written content produced by team members, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and
alignment with the School’s voice and standards.
Team Leadership and Collaboration:
In partnership with the Executive Director, the Director serves as the leader of all
Communications efforts along with a small team that includes a professional staff member
in Greece and an intern.
Collaborate closely with School staff to ensure cohesive messaging and integrated
communications efforts.
Brand / Media Management and Outreach:
Manage the School’s brand identity and uphold its visual standards across all
communication channels.
Cultivate relationships with media outlets, manage press releases, and coordinate media
coverage to increase visibility and engagement for events and lectures.
Oversee the use of iContact for blast communications, ensuring effective dissemination of
information to targeted audiences.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Graphic Design, Fine Arts, or a related field.
Master's degree preferred.
Proven track record (8+ years) in communications leadership roles, preferably in academic,
museum or similar environments.
Expertise in graphic design software (Adobe Creative Suite, etc.) with a strong portfolio
displaying design excellence.
Exceptional writing and editing skills with a keen eye for detail and accuracy.
Ability to effectively work autonomously, displaying self-motivation and initiative in
their tasks and responsibilities.
Strong strategic thinking abilities, adept at developing and implementing communication
plans aligned with organizational objectives.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines
in a fast-paced environment.
Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
Ability to travel domestically and internationally, as needed.
