From Columbia University Libraries/Information
Services. I'm forwarding this to the list because of the use/display of archival
materials.
Dangerous Citizens Online <http://dangerouscitizens.columbia.edu/> is now live at
http://dangerouscitizens.columbia.edu <http://dangerouscitizens.columbia.edu/> . The
website is an interactive, media-rich adaptation of the recently released print book,
Dangerous Citizens: The Greek Left and the Terror of the State (Fordham University Press),
authored by Columbia University Professor Neni Panourgiá. Dangerous Citizens Online tells
the stories and history of Greek dissidents who were detained and tortured between 1929
and 1974.
Dangerous Citizens Online <http://dangerouscitizens.columbia.edu/> is the product
of a partnership between Panourgiá, Fordham University Press, and Columbia's Center
for Digital Research and Scholarship (CDRS). Panourgiá's monograph uses ethnographic
interviews, archival material, unpublished personal narratives, and memoirs to tell the
stories and history of Greek Leftists in the twentieth century. "The greatest
advantage of partnering with CDRS is that the print book can achieve its full pedagogical
potential," said Professor Panourgiá. "CDRS makes it possible for students and
instructors to access my research materials online and share them with classes, allowing
for open, live commentary."
The website integrates the book's narrative with images, video, illuminating text, an
interactive map, and other content to create a dynamic user experience. "We are truly
blown away by the interactive online site that resulted from the collaboration between
Neni, CDRS, and Fordham University Press. Besides surpassing our expectations, it will
enhance the readers appreciation and interpretation of the print book, which is unique in
its own right," shared Fredric Nachbaur, Director, Fordham University Press.
"This project's partnership-uniting a university library, author, and
press-exemplifies new inroads in scholarly communication, and we're excited to be a
part of that," said CDRS Director Rebecca Kennison. "CDRS's role is to
partner with Columbia scholars to support and promote their work-this alternate version of
Dangerous Citizens does this in innovative ways," said Columbia Deputy University
Librarian Patricia Renfro. Fordham University Press released the book in August 2009.
Visitors to Dangerous Citizens Online <http://dangerouscitizens.columbia.edu/> can
