1] English-Language Bibliography on Greek Cinema (2010-2013)
Olga Kourelou - University of Sussex
The following bibliography consists of critical writing on Greek cinema
published in English since 2010 - a year that marks an upsurge in
interest in Greek film. This interest is partly the result of the
growing visibility of Greek films abroad, brought about by the
remarkable international success of Yorgos Lanthimos's 2009
Kynodontas/Dogtooth.
At the same time, it stems from the general attention Greek culture
and society has been attracting due to the financial crisis. In fact,
these two phenomena, recently produced films and the crisis, have been
inextricably linked in discussions of contemporary Greek cinema, as
several of the entries below testify.
The bibliography has been divided into two main sections.
The first one comprises of academic writing and includes books, essays
in edited collections and journal articles, while the second one is
devoted to film criticism. Given the proliferation of outlets for
criticism, especially on the web (through blogs and online magazines
for instance) and mainly regarding Lanthimos's work, the primary
criterion for the selection of articles has been their critical
insight.
Mostly drawn from broadsheet newspapers, like The Guardian and The New
York Times, and from cinephile film magazines, such as Sight and Sound
and Cineaste, the pieces presented in this section have been chosen
for their influence in framing or expanding certain key current
debates around contemporary Greek cinema (for example, Rosen's piece
on what he calls the "Greek Weird Wave").
The criticism gathered here, however, is not only concerned with Greek
films and the Greek film industry, but also with Greek film studies as
an academic field. Therefore, several reviews of recent publications
on Greek cinema have also been included in the latter part of the
bibliography.
A large amount of the material was gathered using the BFI's database,
FIAF and EBSCOhost Connection. While the bibliography has sought to be
comprehensive, it is nonetheless not exhaustive. As this is a column
that will be continuously updated, however, any omissions that occur
here will be completed in future issues.
