Colleagues,
LC's cataloging operation is considering producing cataloging records that include
Greek script (as well as romanized
versions of original Greek script) for Modern Greek titles. (for a sample
record with Greek script in it, see LCCN 2006205713, the record for
Deltion kypriakes vivliographias; accessible via LC's online catalog,
http://catalog.loc.gov/).
The issue has arisen which keyboard layout/IME to use.
Apparently the semi-final choices are as follows:
Greek 220
Greek 319
Greek Polytonic
(you can see the actual layouts by choosing "Greek" at the following site:
http://www.language-keyboard.com/ )
As far as I can tell, the differences are chiefly in how special
characters (brackets, question marks, etc.) are placed on the keyboards.
In terms of accent marks (monotonic/polytonic) in catalog records: since
most titles on Greek title pages are in all capital letters (as is
standard in much of the world), and therefore without any accent marks, I
would assume cataloger-supplied monotonic accent marks would be
sufficient. May I assume that it is acceptable to provide monotonic
accentuation when cataloging pre-1982 as well as current titles?
I need advice from people who know more about these matters than
I! (especially on the keyboard layout). Thanks for any help you can
offer,
Best regards to all,
Harry
