Greece has contributed about 2% of the material that has so far been
collected for Europeana <http://dev.europeana.eu/home.php> – the European
digital library,
museum and archive. With France contributing approximately 52%, Britain and
the Netherlands each 10%, and Finland 8%,
Greece comes in fifth place among the 27 member states of the EU. Greece's
national representative in the project
is Veria Central Public Library <http://www.libver.gr/en/>.
Europeana is a 2-year project that began in July 2007 with the aim to
produce a prototype website giving users direct access
to some 2 million digital objects, including film material, photos,
paintings, sounds, maps, manuscripts, books, newspapers and
archival papers, in 21 languages. The digital content is being selected from
what is already digitised and available in Europe's
museums, libraries, archives and audio-visual collections.
The prototype of European was launched in November 20, 2008 by Viviane
Reding, European Commissioner for Information Society and Media.
