2 unique items from a colleague I met in San Francisco
16. [Photography / Orientalism / Women]. Zangaki [Adelphoi Zangaki]. *No.
549 Danseuses arabes [with] No. 897 Le Promenade*. [Egypt]: [Adelphoi
Zangaki], Circa 1870. Two albumen photographs, 28 x 22 cm, affixed one on
each side of a 34.5 cm x 28 cm sheet of stiff stock. Reinforced with cloth
on one edge and probably removed from a larger album, of which this was one
leaf. Photographs signed "Zangaki" and titled in French in the negative,
with handwritten English titles in ink in the margin below. Light toning
and dampstaining to margins, not affecting photographs; light rippling.
Very Good. (1661)
Two photographs by the Zangaki brothers, a pair of Greek photographers who
were among the earliest to photograph Egypt when it became a tourist
destination in the latter half of the 19th century, particularly for
Europeans and Americans on the Grand Tour. The brothers sometimes worked
with French photographer Hippolyte Arnoux, and given the French titles in
these photographs, may have done so here.
The photographs provide views of the daily life of Egyptian women at the
time: in one, two women dancers wear traditional dress and finger cymbals,
and in the other, a woman in a niqāb rides a donkey led by a man down the
street. In both, the subjects appear at ease and look directly at the
camera.
Uncommon in this format and condition.
