Dear Friends of the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection,
You are cordially invited to attend a live Zoom talk on Dec. 14 by our current Hellenic
Research Fellow, Dr. Konstantina (Nadia) Georgiou. See the relevant event details below.
TITLE: “Network Gatekeeping and the Role of Diasporic Greek Americans in the Promotion and
Dissemination of Post-WWII Translated Modern Greek literature.”
ABSTRACT: The collaborative and networked aspect of producing translated literature is
currently a hot topic in translation and literary criticism, with studies identifying key
gatekeeping agents in the inception, production, circulation and promotion of translated
literature. Uncovering the role and input of these gatekeeping agents is part of the
mission of the sociology of literature in translation. The significance of such
revelations may be profound for our understanding of the creation of a literary work of
art, as it problematises concepts of authorship and originality. My ongoing research
project involves exploring the archival material hosted by the Sacramento University
Library special collections, and in particular the personal and professional
correspondence of Prof. John P. Anton and Basil Vlavianos with leading scholars, writers,
and cultural figures. The paper will discuss some of my findings in John P. Anton’s
papers, focusing on his correspondence with eminent translators, such as Kimon Friar and
Edmund (Mike) Keeley. The paper will take a closer look at the literary network these
three scholars belonged to, identify some of its more influential members and discuss
their roles and impact in the promotion and dissemination of post-WWII translated Modern
Greek literature.
DATE AND TIME: Wednesday, December 14, 2022, 1 p.m. Pacific Time (US and Canada). The talk
will be recorded and archived for later viewing.
