Dear colleagues, this is Harry Leich writing (I retired 14 months ago from the Library of
Congress).
I am still, on a volunteer basis, handling Modern Greek reference inquiries submitted to
LC. One came in today.
The researcher is trying to identify what was the "oldest arithmetic book published
in the Modern Greek language." The earliest one identified they have found so far is
a 1797 Greek translation by Spyridon Asanes of a work originally in French, probably first
published in the 1750s, by:
La Caille, Nicolas Louis de, 1713-1762
with the Greek title (LC romanization) Stoicheia arithmetikes te kai algevras. Published
in Venice in 1797.
We assume the requester is looking for school textbooks rather than scholarly works.
I do not have any in-person access to the LC buildings and print reference collections
because of the pandemic, and probably won't for another month or more. If anybody has
any leads on how to handle this query, please get back to me. The requester's
institutional affiliation is unknown.
Many thanks, and best wishes to all!
Harry Leich
