Proposal for Revision of Uighur Romanization Table
11/05/14
A proposal to revise the Uighur romanization table has been submitted to the Library of
Congress and is available for review at
Uighur<http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/romanization/uighur-rev.pdf> <
http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/romanization/uighur-rev.pdf > [PDF, 207 KB].
The objectives of this revision are fourfold:
* 1. The existing rules were occasionally confusing and conflicting (e.g. Rule 2) and
hampered reversibility (Rules 2, 6, 7, and 9).
* 2. The letters "i" and "y" are distinct in Uighur and should be
distinct in Romanization.
* 3. Medial hamzah should be romanized ' (alif).
* 4. The new table is now almost completely reversible.
Comments on this proposed romanization table may be sent to Bruce Johnson, Policy and
Standards Division (bjoh@loc.gov<mailto:bjoh@loc.gov>) by February 5, 2015.
