We are appointing a permanent Assistant Curator of Rare Books to join the
team based in the Weston Library. Reporting to the Head of Rare Books and
Printed Ephemera, this is an exciting opportunity to develop your knowledge
and skills, and to make a significant contribution in all areas of our work.
You will be responsible for cataloguing all early printed books acquired by
the Section throughout the year; for answering the large numbers of
enquiries and research requests we receive, and for developing and
maintaining our online presence with informative and relevant content,
including revamping our current web pages. You will also support senior
staff with a range of other tasks including acquisitions, reader services,
exhibitions, projects, training, and collections management.
You will have an appropriate degree and a professional library
qualification or equivalent and knowledge of Latin and at least one other
modern European language. Previous experience working with rare books,
demonstrable knowledge and/or formal training of historical and descriptive
bibliography and sound knowledge of modern and antiquarian cataloguing
standards. You will have excellent IT skills, and be confident working with
a range of databases, content management systems, and social media
applications. You will enjoy communicating with our users, visitors and the
wider public, and have excellent organisational and problem-solving skills.
You will be committed to building your career in this field, and should
expect to develop expertise in areas such as early children’s books, 19th
century bibliography, English literature, or the history of science.
There will be significant amounts of unpacking, shelving and carrying of
collection materials, some of which may be large and/or heavy.
This is a full-time, permanent post. Evening and Saturday duties will be
required on a rota basis.
Owing to the nature of this post, candidates will be required to undertake
a Disclosure Scotland check as well as a financial background check. The
possession of a criminal record or poor financial background will not
necessarily prevent an applicant from obtaining this post, as all cases are
judged individually according to the nature of the role and information
provided.
This post is part of a pilot scheme testing a new Supporting Evidence Form
in place of the more usual ‘supporting statement’. Please ensure that you
carefully read the How to Apply section provided in the Job Description,
which you can download below along with the required Supporting Evidence
form. You MUST submit a completed Supporting Evidence Form in order for
your application to be processed. Covering letters, supporting statements
and CVs will NOT form part of the selection process.
Only applications received online before 12.00 midday on Monday 19
September 2016 can be considered. Interviews are expected to take place on
Tuesday 4 October 2016.
