Catalogue of the Late Roman
And Barbaric Byzantine Coins in the Charles University Collection (364
- 1092 AD)
paperback, 96 pages, 21 x 29.6 cm, English - more
It is a major problem in the collections of archaeological or
historical nature, not only coins, unless they are presented in the
form of publishing professionals. Present group of coins published in
this catalog is not only to protect public property as one particular
university, but make it available to the entire scientific community,
thus enabling progress in the area of historical and numismatic
studies. The work Federica Gambacorti can therefore welcome a
significant expansion of the published numismatic material owned by
Charles University. This work builds on the work of dignity V. Mark,
more than a quarter-century took the first step towards the
publication of the university coin collection. Compared to the
original decision to focus on only a late Roman coins author in his
treatment included also Byzantine coins and barbaric. This catalog
introduces the audience to a group of coins, which were themselves
witnesses of the main characters and the time when they were created.
Coins, unlike other categories of objects was used on all levels of
society and all she could give clear information to those who could
not read. Paintings on them portrayed the ruling emperors, members of
the imperial family, heirs and guarantors of continuity and stability
empire these people can recognize and represent a suitable model to
emulate the subjects of all classes. Other images on the reverse are
designed to reassure users of the efforts of the emperor to ensure
peace, solidity of institutions, the integrity of the border. In the
final phase of empire is growing legend celebrating the winners of the
emperors, the glory of the Romans, national security, the restoration
of law, health law and Concordia depicting emperors of Rome on the
throne and the symbols of power. Types and legends on coins inform us
about the social and religious changes that have taken place in the
structure of the Roman Empire in the time of Constantine the Great and
beyond. Byzantine coins and coin produced by the Ostrogoths in Italy
in the last century of coin before the crisis, which in the west of
the old Roman Empire will cause the disappearance of the coin is
practically no different from Roman coins.
