“Ferghana Valley: The Heart of Central Asia”

To kick off the Davis Center’s week of Central Asian studies, Baktybek Beshimov, a visiting scholar at the Davis Center, will give a talk on current and future prospects for the Ferghana Valley, a dynamic region shared by Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.  The talk will be based on the book of the same name that Beshimov co-authored.

Sarang is one of the best-loved Uyghur movies, and now it is the first Uyghur movie to be available with English subtitles. This lively mixture of comedy and tragedy, set and filmed in China's Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, is based on a short story by the celebrated author Memtimin Hoshur.

An Evening of Turkmen Culture

In celebration of Turkmenistan's 20th anniversary of independence, a brief lecture on Turkmenistan by Laura Adams will be followed by a festive evening of Central Asian food, music and dance.
