    A very fast and competitive meet. In the end we didn't have enough to overcome Princeton's depth.

Crimson Takes Second at HYP Meet

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Harvard men's swimming and diving team won three races, including two individual events, on the second and final day of the annual HYP meet to earn a second-place finish Sunday at Blodgett Pool.  The Crimson claimed a 251-102 victory over Yale, but fell to Princeton, 193-160. With the weekend split, Harvard concludes its regular season with an 8-1 overall record and 6-1 mark in the Ivy League.
   The Crimson opened the afternoon with a victory in the 200 medley relay with its first of five NCAA "B" qualifying times on the day.  The foursome of Jordan Diekema, Simone Melillo, Bill Jones and David Guernsey completed the race with a meet-best mark of 1:28.52.  Teammates Robert Newell, Justin Davidson, Nicholas Tan and Tyler Holland swam fourth in 1:32.04.D Diekema led a 1-2 finish for the Crimson in the 200 backstroke, as he and Newell recorded the two fastest times of the competition.  Diekema grabbed the wall in 1:45.16, while Newell cruised to second in 1:46.93.  Derick Chui was the fifth swimmer to reach the finish line, as he posted a mark of 1:47.74.
   Guernsey later completed the 100 freestyle with a "B" mark of 43.55, good for second place.  Will Heyburn followed in 44.69 for sixth.  Bill and Dan Jones went 2-3 in the 100 butterfly race, with Bill recording a "B" time of 47.15.  Dan was third in the event, as he finished in 48.21. Alex Meyer won Harvard's third race, as he claimed victory in the closely-contested 500 freestyle.  Meyer swam the event in 4:22.83, while teammate Eric Lynch was fourth in 4:23.60, as the top four swimmers were separated by less than two seconds.  Meyer and Lynch's time were both "B" cuts.  Blake Lewkowtiz (4:25.38) and Mason Brunnick (4:26.79) were sixth and seventh, respectively.
   In the 400 IM, Douwe Yntema cruised to a third-place finish, touching the wall in 3:54.75.  Tim Parent, meanwhile, placed sixth in the race with a time of 3:58.48.   Zac Ranta scored the third most points in the three-meter diving competition, as he posted a score of 291.10.  Andy Krantz was seventh with 243.20 points. Melillo and Parent were the Crimson's best swimmers in the 200 breaststroke with Melillo taking fifth in 2:03.23.  Parent, who placed seventh, completed the race in 2:03.55.
   In the weekend's final event, Harvard had two of the top four marks in the 400 freestyle relay.  The squad comprised of B. Jones, Heyburn, Eric Taylor and Graham Frankel had a collective time of 2:59.26 for second, while the foursome of Matthew McLean, Nicholas DuCille, Tyler Holland and Rick McKellar came in fourth in 3:04.34

The Crimson will have almost a month off before resuming action when the team hosts the ECAC Championships Feb. 27-March 1 at Blodgett.
