Diving Clinches EISL Regular-Season Title

Wollner took two
events in Saturday's win over Penn
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The
No. 22 Crimson clinched its sixth EISL regular-season title in head
coach Tim
Murphy's
10-year tenure with a 189-104 win over Penn on Saturday. The win also
gives Harvard a perfect 9-0 record on the season, including an 8-0 mark
in conference competitions.
Senior Sam
Wollner won two individual swimming events on the afternoon, and Bill
Jones, Jordan
Diekema and David
Guernsey each recorded an individual and a medley relay victory. Zac
Ranta claimed both the one and three-meter diving events.
The Crimson captured wins in
13 of the 16 events on
the day, starting with an 11-point contribution from the 200 medley
relay team of juniors Guernsey and Bill
Jones, and freshmen Justin
Davidson and Diekema, who touched the wall in 1:33.45.
Harvard grabbed 11 more
points in the 1000 freestyle, courtesy of a 1-2 finish by Eric
Lynch (9:21.28) and Mason
Brunnick (9:34.44). The 200 freestyle saw a 1-2-3 Crimson finish,
with Jordan
Waterman leading the way with a time of 1:43.35, more than two
seconds ahead of teammates Dan
Jones and Douwe
Yntema.
Diekema and Simone
Melillo
kept the points rolling for Harvard with wins in the 100 backstroke
(51.61) and the 100 breaststroke (58.93), respectively. Wollner
recorded the top times in both the 200 butterfly (1:52.83) and the 100
freestyle (47.56).
Ranta and Hank Winslow were the top-two scorers in
the one-meter diving event and Ranta also won the three-meter event.
Ranta scored a 301.73 in the one-meter and a 312.60 in the three-meter
in his victories. Michael
Bowen earned Harvard its ninth win in 10 events with a 1:56.26 time
in the 200 backstroke, and Mike
Polino
(2:12.96) and Yntema (2:18.21) followed suit with a 1-2 finish in the
200 backstroke. Brothers Bill (50.62) and Dan (51.57) Jones finished
less than a second apart atop the 100 butterfly race, and Guernsey
rounded out the Crimson wins with a 1:56.87 mark in the 200 individual
medley.
The Crimson will next swim at the ECAC Championships in Pittsburgh,
Pa., Feb.29 - March 2.
