No. 22 Men's Swimming and Diving Retains Hold of Second Place at ECAC Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Behind Graham Frankel's two second-place efforts, the No. 22 Harvard men's swimming and diving team finished second at the ECAC Championships, hosted by the Crimson this weekend at Blodgett Pool.  Harvard accumulated 512.5 points over the three-day meet, trailing only Navy (703.5).  Rider was third with 416 points, while Loyola and Columbia were fourth and fifth with 343 and 287 points, respectively.

In the 100 freestyle, Frankel recorded the team's highest individual finish of the day, as he claimed second in the event.  Frankel recorded a mark of 44.85, less than half a second off the pace of the winner, Drew Modrov, from Rider (44.40).  Tyler Holland was close behind, as he took fourth, finishing in 45.73.  Matthew McLean also swam the 100 free, posting a time of 46.93 for 14th. 

The Crimson capped the weekend by placing second in the 400 freestyle relay.  The unit of Frankel, Rick McKellar, Eric Taylor and Tyler Holland out swam all teams but Navy, finishing in the narrowest of margins behind the Midshipmen.  The Crimson foursome posted a time of 3:00.80, just 0.09 seconds behind Navy. 


Harvard opened the third and final day of the meet with a sixth-place performance by Jamie Mannion in the 1650 freestyle, as the Crimson swimmer cruised to a finish in 16:04.37.  Mannion placed 16th in the next event, the 200 backstroke, as he grabbed the wall with a time of 1:59.14.  David Lynch had the Crimson's best time in the 200 backstroke race, as he swam seventh in 1:53.11.

Ross Ford posted a solid mark in the 200 butterfly, completing the event in 1:49.34 for fourth.  The Crimson also went 10-11-12 in the race, led by McKellar's time of 1:50.42.  Robert Lynch was 11th in 1:50.58, while Niall Janney swam 12th in 1:50.82. 

Michael Lin was the lone Crimson swimmer in the finals of the 200 breaststroke.  Lin garnered a 15th-place finish as he completed the race in 2:08.97.

The Crimson will return to action at the Ivy League Championships March 5-7 in Princeton, N.J.  Harvard will attempt to defend its conference crown and seek the 23th Ivy title in program history.
