June 8, 2005
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Francis H. Burr Scholarship, which is presented to the senior who best combines qualities of leadership, scholarship and athletic ability, was given to James Lawler (Greenwich, Conn.) of the men's swimming and diving team Wednesday at the annual Harvard Varsity Club Senior Letterwinners Dinner at the Murr Center.
Nine awards were presented Wednesday -- one day before the university's Commencement exercises in Harvard Yard -- in front of a crowd of more than 600 student-athletes, coaches, parents and supporters of Harvard Athletics.
Lawler helped the Crimson to an undefeated regular season as well as the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League championship in his first year back with the program after he spent the 2003-04 season training for the U.S. Olympic Trials. He finished the year as the EISL champion in six events and swam on three relay squads at this year's NCAA championships.
