CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Former
Harvard swimmer Bill
Jones has been named to the ESPN The Magazine
Academic All-America men’s at-large third team, the College Sports
Information Directors of America announced this week.
Jones
graduated last week with a degree in organismic and evolutionary
biology. He finished his career at the NCAA 2009 Championships,
competing in the 100- and 200-yard butterflies, placing 28th in the 100
fly in 47.11 seconds. He earned 16 All-Ivy honors in his career,
including four this season.
The Fremont,
Mich.,
native was a part of the victorious, league-record-setting 200 medley
relay squad and the second-place 400 medley and 800 freestyle teams at
the Ivy League Championships. He posted an individual runner-up finish
in the 100 fly, beating the previous Ivy League record with his time of
46.12.
Jones
led Harvard to a second-place finish at the Ivy League Championships
and in the league dual standings. He was a key factor in the Crimson’s
2008 league championship.
On
the eve of commencement, Jones was presented with the John G. Reardon
’60 Men’s Award. This prize is presented annually to Harvard’s senior
varsity male athlete who exemplifies the qualities of excellent
scholarship, character, leadership and athletic ability.
Senior Emily
Cross
of the Crimson women’s fencing team was named to the Academic
All-America women’s at-large third team. She and Jones are Harvard’s
62nd and 63rd CoSIDA Academic All-America selections. Jones is the
fourth Crimson men’s swimmer to earn the honor, joining Paul Watson in
1990, Tim Martin in 2000 and James Lawler in 2005.
The
men’s at-large program for Academic All-America includes the sports of
fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis
and water polo.
