Central-Eurasia-L -- Announcement List for Central Eurasian Studies

Welcome to Central-Eurasia-L -- the Announcement List for Central Eurasian Studies

About Central-Eurasia-L

The purpose of this announcement list is to facilitate broad distribution of information by e-mail about matters of interest to Central Eurasian studies.

At the bottom of this message are instructions on how to subscribe to and unsubscribe from Central-Eurasia-L, in case you would like to leave the list or help someone to join.

Anyone wishing to be aware of events, opportunities, resources, and programs in Central Eurasian Studies is welcome to subscribe. Anyone, whether subscribed or not, who would like to publicize such events, opportunities, etc. -- or who is aware of such events and is generously inclined to share the knowledge -- should feel encouraged to submit postings for distribution to all subscribers.

Geographically, the list encompasses the five former Soviet Central Asian republics -- Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan -- as well as closely related neighboring regions ranging from Eastern Turkistan, Mongolia, Tibet, Afghanistan and Iran, the Caucasus, Muslim-, Turkic-, and Mongol inhabited regions of Russia, etc.

Announcements and subscribers are welcome from the Central Eurasian studies community worldwide. An archive of postings to Central-Eurasia-L may be found at the "Central Eurasian Studies World Wide" website: http://cesww.fas.harvard.edu/CESWW_Central-Eurasia-L.html

List Guidelines

Please note that this is not a discussion list; our hope is that no one will feel disinclined to subscribe on the grounds that too much bulk is distributed (either because they don't want to pay for extra kilobytes or because they don't have time to read it).

Therefore, postings should be well-formatted for good readability. They should not contain opinion, scholarly views, or comments on other messages. They may include requests for information of a general nature that would be of interest to a broad segment of the list's subscribership, but subscribers are requested not to solicit information of primary relevance to their personal research, travel plans, etc.

Please note that other lists exist for the purposes for which this list is not intended -- i.e., discussion, queries of a specific nature, etc. This list is not intended to be redundant of such existing lists, but rather to provide a limited forum for those who are interested in notices, but may not be interested in discussion.

The kinds of announcements to be posted may include the following:

  • Conferences.
  • Seminars, special lectures, talks.
  • Central Eurasia-related cultural events.
  • Calls for papers - for conferences, journals, etc.
  • Visits and appearances by international scholars and Central Eurasian public figures; this can be especially useful if such announcements can lead to scheduling more events, and thus maximizing such opportunities.
  • Notices on new books, periodicals, or major articles in Central Eurasian Studies or closely related fields.
  • Job openings (academic and non-academic).
  • Grant and fellowship opportunities.
  • Internship opportunities.
  • Programs in Central Eurasian Studies -- including information about current language and area studies course offerings, major research projects, key faculty, and other particulars.

This is not meant to be an exhaustive list of topics; anything of interest to any broad segment of the Central Eurasian Studies community might also be submitted.

In writing postings, please keep in mind a few principles of format for quick reading:

  • Introduce the posting with a term in all capital letters which designates what the announcement concerns -- e.g., "CONF.-", "JOB-", "GRANT-", etc.
  • Divide points in the announcement into paragraphs with space between them for readability.
  • Avoid centering, strings of asterisks, etc. which can be distorted as the posting goes through various e-mail systems.
  • Do not use any formatting, such as boldface, italics and indenting, as it can be corrupted by various e-mail systems.
  • Include complete information -- especially telephone numbers and e-mail or postal addresses from which to request further information.
  • Be concise.
  • READ IT OVER CAREFULLY before submitting the posting.

Note the following guidelines for some categories of postings. It is the responsibility of the person posting an announcement to insure conformity with these rules. Postings that don't conform may be truncated or ignored:

  • There are *very* strict limitations on commercial notices. Only *extremely brief* notices (name, address, and a one-phrase profile) of commercial offerings *directly* of relevance to Central Eurasian Studies are allowed. These will be posted only as a bunch, clearly marked as commercial.
  • In order to avoid bulky postings, all notices should provide only the key information, indicating where fuller information may be sought.

Postings to this list are moderated and may be edited, shortened, corrected or reorganized, to ensure readability, brevity and quality of information.

Please help us to encourage as many appropriate people as possible to sign up to Central-Eurasia-L. The more subscribers we have, the larger the pool of people who can exchange useful information. Also the larger the audience, the greater the incentive for people to submit useful postings (for example, grant organizations will recognize it as a good way to publicize their grant competitions).

Finally, we invite everyone to give us feedback on how Central-Eurasia-L may better serve its purpose.

Thank you for your interest!

John Schoeberlein
