*COACH'S CORNER*
For the first time in several years, the Crimson team defeated the Black
team 168.5- 142.5 in the annual Intrasquad Meet held October 20, 2006.
The entire team put in a full week of hard work in the pool and in
dryland and weight room sessions, not to mention a two hour workout the
morning before the Intrasquad Meet. To make it more interesting, they
swam 150s instead of 200s and a 400 free instead of a 500. There was
some great racing and close events as both teams fought to earn points.
This is the time in the season where they train to not only be
physically tough, but to ensure that they are mentally tough as well.
The next morning, for those who remember this, they completed one of the
most successful 55x100 sets to date, a sign that they are very
determined and focused this year.
*HWSD ALUMNAE*- You will receive a phone call (provided that we have
updated information on you) from a team member this coming Wednesday,
November 1. The point of the phone call is to inform you of our
upcoming meets and reconnect you with your previous team experience. If
you have not updated your information on the Harvard Alumni web site
(post.harvard.edu) then please do so!
*ALUMNI Meet* information can be found below under the Alumni Notes

*Co-captain Noelle Bassi was featured in the football program vs.
Lafayette. Article below by Casey Hart.*
*The Bassi Standard*
The Harvard women's swimming and diving team was not supposed to beat
Rutgers last season. Sure, the Crimson was the No. 25 team in the
country and had won its previous 17 dual meets. But the Scarlet Knights,
ranked 24th, were no pushovers. Not to mention that Harvard had just
returned from its grueling weeklong winter training trip. Noelle Bassi
was not supposed to swim the 400-yard individual medley against Rutgers,
either.
Bassi, in the middle of her second consecutive All-America season for
Harvard, had started the afternoon by claiming victory in the 200
butterfly, her signature event. Then, matched head-to-head with Rutgers
star Kelly Harrigan, Bassi had come out on top in the 500 freestyle.
That race was just two events before the 400 IM, the final individual
contest of the meet. Harvard led by a single point but needed a win in
the IM, as a strong group of Rutgers sprinters were waiting in the 400
free relay. That meant Bassi was swimming.
"I know the last thing she felt like doing after swimming a 200 fly and
a 500 free was to get right back in there and swim a 400 IM, knowing
that she had to win it," says Harvard head coach Stephanie Wriede
Morawski '92. "But she didn't complain. She just gave me one of those
looks, got up there and did it. She won the race, and that's how we won
the meet." And that's how Morawski describes her senior co-captain: the
kind of leader who takes charge in the middle of meet, the kind of
competitor who recognizes when her team needs points, then dives in and
takes them.
"Noelle's definitely one of the best swimmers we have had at Harvard,"
says Morawski, who is in her 10th season at the helm of the Crimson and
has spent 15 years involved with the program as an athlete and coach.
"And she is not afraid to go above and beyond, to do extra workouts,
whether it's a spin class, elliptical, going for a run or anything extra
on her own. When she's in the pool, she loves to race, and that's what
the sport's about."
That competitive fire has led to a great deal of success for Bassi. The
owner of school records in three very different events, Bassi was the
Swimmer of the Meet at the 2006 Ivy League Championships, led the
Crimson to the 2005 Ivy League title and helped Harvard win all 20 of
its dual meets while capturing the Ivy League dual-meet championship in
each of her two years on the team. Her 14th-place finish in the 200 fly
at the 2006 NCAA Championships made her the just fifth Crimson swimmer
-- and the first since Morawski in 1991 and 1992 -- to earn All-America
honors in consecutive seasons.
Bassi's greatest strength lies in long-course swimming, where each pool
length is 50 meters instead of 25 yards, so she makes three turns in the
course of a national or international 200 fly instead of the seven
required in a college race. She captured a U.S. national championship in
the 200-meter butterfly in 2004 and placed sixth in the event at the
Olympic Trials, an experience she won't soon forget. "There really
isn't another meet like Olympic Trials," says Bassi. "No one can ever
take away my experience. Just to be there and have a legitimate shot at
making the Olympics is amazing. I learned a lot about myself as a person
and a swimmer and hopefully those things have paved the way for future
successes."
After coming so close, taking another shot at the Olympics is definitely
on the mind of Bassi, who has already qualified for the 2008 Trials for
the Beijing Games.
However, with just one year left at Harvard and aspirations of graduate
school and a career in clinical psychology, Bassi is not sure if or how
training for the Trials will fit into her post-college life. Instead of
worrying about the future now, her mind is on this year's team and
making the most of her senior season, which starts with a dual meet
against Penn Nov. 4.
To prepare the team for the season, she and co-captain Kyle Cutter have
taken an active approach. They've met alone and with teammates and
coaches to establish goals for the team and strategies for reaching
those aims. The Crimson made it all the way to No. 21 in the final
2005-2006 College Swim Coaches of America national poll, and Bassi is
not ready to stop climbing the charts. She wants to help her teammates
continue to improve so more of them can join her at the NCAA
Championships. She wants to keep winning dual meets, which she cautions
can only happen "one meet at a time." Then there's the matter of the Ivy
title that got away last year. "Last year the majority of the team had
championship rings," she points out. "Not that we were complacent, but
we were missing some of that desire. Now that half our team hasn't won a
championship, we're motivated to get it back."
When she says, "The main focus we've had this year has been getting
everyone on the same page," Bassi means it literally. She and Cutter
came up with a poster with the team's mission statement and goals and
had every team member sign it. In another part of her role as captain,
Bassi has been a mentor to the Crimson freshmen and has even helped
shape next year's team, despite the fact that by then she will likely be
hitting the books in grad school or hitting the pool in pursuit of her
Olympic dreams. Morawski says Bassi has helped with recruiting, making
it clear that she wants only serious swimmers to follow in her footsteps
and those of her teammates who have marched the Crimson into the top 25.
Then, of course, there's the pool, where Bassi's leadership is most
evident. She is not only one of the top performers in the history of
Harvard swimming but also one of the program's hardest workers. She has
trained diligently to improve her sprinting, turning it from a weakness
to a strength and making her a more dominant collegiate swimmer.
"Noelle is an extremely dedicated athlete, teammate and leader. She
gives everything she has every single day, and as a leader on our team,
that's extremely important," Cutter says of her co-captain. "Noelle's
swims do more for our team than just contribute valuable points. What
makes Noelle special is that she holds herself to a higher standard, and
her actions motivate others to do the same."
A native of Franklin Lakes, N.J., Bassi considered attending Harvard
coming out of Mercersburg Academy but decided to accept a scholarship to
swim for the University of Tennessee. However, after a year in
Knoxville, she sought a return to the Northeast and the academic
challenge of the Ivy League. With the blessing of her parents -- who
told her, "You can't put a price on happiness" -- Bassi moved on to
Cambridge.
"I took another trip to Harvard and just felt that the team had made a
lot of strides in the right direction, and that Steph was definitely
building a program that was moving in the direction of the top 25,"
Bassi says.
NCAA transfer rules prevented Bassi from competing for the Crimson her
first year on campus. She trained with the team but could not suit up at
meets, concentrating instead on the upcoming National and Olympic
Trials. It was tough for her to stand on the pool deck while her
teammates lost to rival Princeton by just 16.5 points at the 2004 Ivy
Championships, but Bassi says it was that season on the sidelines which
taught her the value of contributing to the team out of the pool, a
lesson that is paying dividends now that she is a captain.
That first year in Cambridge also allowed Bassi to settle into academic
life at Harvard, and she has excelled, earning national academic honors
for her high grade-point average as a psychology concentrator. Bassi is
interested in the social aspects of psychology and the juncture of
biology and psychology. She spent last summer in Cambridge working in
the health and psychophysiology lab, and she's continuing her research
during the school year. Perhaps unsurprisingly for someone who spends so
much time training her body to perform at an elite level, she enjoys the
real-world connections of how the mind works with the body.
She doesn't really know how she manages to fit workouts, classes, a job
in the psych lab and even a little television into the day. Her coach
knows the key is working tirelessly and continually seeking new
challenges, and she points to Bassi as an example of an athlete who
takes advantage of all Harvard has to offer. "She sets very high
standards for herself and doesn't like not achieving them," says
Morawski. "The bottom line is she's strong and doesn't want to give up.
She wants to keep going and keep pushing to be the best she can be." As
Cutter puts it, "There is a degree of quality in everything Noelle does
that raises the bar." Bassi has one more year of that hectic life before
decision time arrives, but if she keeps going like she has, Morawski
says it should be a win-win situation. "If she has a great year this
year, she'll either feel great about it and go on competing, or she'll
feel satisfied with everything that she's done and leave on a good note."
Regardless of her decision at the end of the year, Noelle Bassi will
leave behind a higher standard of excellence for Crimson swimmers both
in and out of the pool.
