Men's Swimming and Diving update from Coach Tim Murphy:
HMSD had some outstanding performances at the 2012 Ivy Championships this past weekend. While the outcome was unsatisfactory, with our team coming in second to Princeton by 77 points, we are in a great position moving forward. Fifteen of our twenty athletes entered in the meet were freshmen and sophomores and they scored 92% of our total points These swimmers set six new team records and included five swimmers who qualified for the 2012 NCAA Championships. Team records were broken in the 50 free and 100 free, 100 and 200 breast and 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Freshmen Chuck Katis qualified for NCAA’s in the 100 breaststroke and sophomore Chris Satterthwaite qualified in the 200 freestyle. Our 400 freestyle relay, which went 2:53.22, qualified 10th and included Satterthwaite, freshmen Zac Walters and Griffin Schumacher and sophomore Oliver Lee.

Other highlights from the meet include:

-Three swimmers breaking our 50 freestyle record. Sophomores Chris Satterthwaite went 19.84, Freshmen Griffin Schumacher swam 19.87 and sophomore Oliver Lee went 19.99.
-Chuck Katis placing second in three events. 100 breast 53.1, 200 breast 1:56.49 (both team records) and 200 Im 1:46
-Chris Satterthwaite winning three events-50/100/200 free (19.84, 43.18, (both team records) 1:35.05) and being named Swimmer of the Meet
-Fiver milers going under 15:45, six swimmers going 9:20 or under in the 1000 free
-Three swimmers going 1:37 or under in the 200 free
-Four breaststrokers going :56 or under in the 100 breast, three going 2:03 or under in the 200 breast

Our divers performed well at Ivy Championships. Mike Mosca, a freshman, won the 1 meter board with a score of 359.55 Sophomore Joe Zarrella placed 4th and Junior Michael Stanton placed 6th. On the 3 meter board, Mosca placed 2nd, Stanton 3rd and Zarrella came in 11th.

Bobby Hackett ‘81 spoke with the team several times during the meet about how to succeed. We appreciate his and the other alum who came out to support the team. Other alum in attendance included Michael Dunn ‘11, Simone Melillo ‘10, Douwe Yntema ‘11, Alex Meyer ‘10, Jamie Mannion ‘11, Justin Davidson ‘11. Thanks to the many alumni who offered their encouragement and congratulations over the phone and email.

We’ve got a great base to build on. Next year’s freshmen should help us and we are looking forward to teaching our guys how to win.
