"Caracalla and the expeditio Germanorum against the Alamanni (?) . . . per limitem
Raetiae"
Abstract: Various literary sources refer to the Caracalla's campaign against the
Alamanni in 213, but they conflict with each other. This paper tries to resolve the
contradictions in the context of the archaeological evidence in southern Germany. New
discoveries, in particular at and around Faimingen, Dalkingen, and Neuenstadt am Kocher,
will be presented. The campaign may have been conducted at these sites, and the Emperor
may even have visited them.
