winedt is good for window version latex. it's also a good program editor
for window version of R. it is as if emacs you use in unix system.

guys,
if anybody is thinking about doing work in Latex beyond gov 1000/2001, i
would highly recommend getting WinEdt: an editor for latex documents
with graphics interface (read: without the emacs-related headaches). to
list just a few handy features: compiling & conversion to ps/pdf files
via button click, different coloring for different latex command groups
(e.g. those requiring an \end{} line), multiple "undo", easy
bibliography management, etc, etc. basically, it combines the
convenience of MS Word interface with the coolness of Latex.
to get it, you first have to download Latex from:
www.miktex.org
then go here to get WinEdt:
http://www.winedt.com/
it's free for the first month, and then you buy it ($40) or keep using
it while ignoring 'reminders' to register.
the only disadvantage i can think of is that if you do graphics in R
using emacs, you'll have to transfer the ps-files to your home computer
before they can be inserted in your Latex document.
i wish i knew about this program before today - a latex guru on my floor
just helped me download evth. it's worth it.

Subject: Re: [gov1000-list] LaTeX table formatting (unrelated to final)
Footnote and tablenote are not suppored in the article package. You
need
to get the astronomy version of the article package, and then you can
use
the \tablenote command, which will put your footnotes nicely formatted
at
the bottom of your table.
Wow. Another paper in latex? What are you thinking? 8)

Second problem is trying to include footnotes in the table. Using
\footnotemark is not working within the caption of the chart?
Any help would be appreciated as I am about 3 or 4 frustrating errors
away
from doing the document in Word Perfect.
