Helene,
There must be a typo in that line. Where you have:
> chunrate<-c(NA, NA, NA, unrate[4:length(unrate)]-unrate[1:(unrate)-3])
replace it with
> chunrate<-c(NA, NA, NA,
unrate[4:length(unrate)]-unrate[1:length(unrate)-3])

Subject: Gov1000: question
Hello Jacob, I hope you had a happy hanukah.
I have a question regarding the solution to PS7. NOt an emergency though
so answer when you can.
I tried to create a variable for change in unemployment
using your solution:
> chunrate<-c(NA, NA, NA, unrate[4:length(unrate)]-unrate[1:(unrate)-3])
Here is what I get:
Warning messages:
1: Numerical expression has 570 elements: only the first used in:
1:(unrate)
2: longer object length
is not a multiple of shorter object length in:
unrate[4:length(unrate)] - unrate[1:(unrate) - 3]
What do I do wrong? Am I not using the right data set?
Thanks,
Helene
The meeting time of Wednesday, January 21 from 9:30-10:30 should be AM not PM.
I apologize for the confusion! Have a good weekend and I look forward to
hearing from you.
Prof. Gary King asked me to write to each of you to set up a meeting, the
subject of which is the methods sequence, the role of methods in political
science, and any other big picture issues that might be of interest to you.
Can you please tell me via email (kschader(a)latte.harvard.edu) which of the
following meeting times you would be able attend? If you are able to
attend more than one, tell me which would be your first, second, etc
choice. I will pick the time that works best for the most people.
The options are --
Tuesday, January 20: 10:00 am - 11:00 am
Tuesday, January 20: 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Wednesday, January 21: 9:30 pm - 10:30 pm
Wednesday, January 21: 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Thursday, January 22: 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Thank you in advance for your cooperation!
Regards,
Kim

My wonderful, high-end, durable ibm laptop has experienced what technical
support calls an 'irrevocable hard drive failure.' And while I keep a backup, I will
not be able to access it for a few weeks (until a newer, sleeker, repaired version of
my high-end machine is delivered to me).
So if you had sent me your last homework online, I need you please to
resend it as soon as possible. If you have sent me an email in the last
two days, you do not need to resend it.
Hope you are all well,
Jacob
Hi everyone. Just FYI, Gov 2001, currently scheduled for the Fall,
has as a prerequisite Gov 2000, which is offered this Spring. This is a
change from the past, in which Gov 2001 started right after 1000.
Its also a reasonably good rule of thumb to devote one course every
semester to methods of some kind, so I'd check out 2000.
Best,
Gary

Hey guys,
Hope you all enjoyed gov1000 bingo yesterday. If you filled out a board,
please be sure to give it to Eric Lomazoff, the official judge, who will be
around until Thursday (you can drop it in his box at Littauer). He'll do
all the judging, decide on a winner, and then dispense the cash.
By the way, it seems that Jas has offered to sweeten the pot, so be sure to
submit those boards! (I'm not sure if the pot is being sweetened with cash
or higher grades, but...)
Enjoy the break!
Alex
Hi,
A number of you have suggested that I teach a course on the philosophy
of the social sciences. If I were to teach a 1000-level course on
causality and inference in the social sciences, how many of you would
be *really* interested and likely to take it. In order to avoid
clutter, please send your responses to me and not the list in general.
Cheers,
Jas.
Hello All,
Given all of the work that people have been doing on Question 2,
Question #3 has now been made OPTIONAL. This question was supposed to
be due next Wednesday. If you decide to do the question, it will help
you on the final but it will no longer be counted as a homework
assignment.
Cheers,
Jas.
