a$yearname <- as.character(a$year)
then stick in "yearname" where you put in "year" before.

Quoting Olivia Lau <olau(a)fas.harvard.edu>du>:
How about sharing how you got the labels on the
individual plots first?
Anyone know how to convert a column of factors to a column of characters?
In order to plot by election, for example, year has to be a factor, but
(according to Phil) in order to label the plots, the field has to be a
character field already. Needless to say, I'm not making much progress.

the ps

Thanks,
