Dear Physics Community,
I am writing to provide you with a brief update and notice on some facilities improvements that have occurred or will be occurring over the next few months.
Library Pods
As I hope all have noticed by now, we have installed 3 pods in the library which are meant to be used by the Physics community for additional workspace. Our team is finalizing the details and access with RoomBook and HUIT so that the spaces can be reservable. I will be sending a separate notification out with the details of how to book the spaces and expectations on use in the next few weeks. In the meantime, you may continue to use the spaces on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that the outer glass is meant to be used as additional writing space for discussions, but you should NOT write on the glass inside of the pods; there is instead a single whiteboard meant for this purpose.
Camera Installation
As part of an ongoing facilities review and in response to persistent and ongoing concerns surrounding harassment and property vandalism within the department, our partners from the Office of Physical Resources and Planning (OPRP) will be installing security cameras along the second-floor corridor of Jefferson and the main entrances of Jefferson 2 and Lyman 2. Given that this footprint serves more than our own community, OPRP determined there was a need for this installation as is the case in numerous buildings within our vicinity. Please know that these cameras are not managed or accessed by the department.
Outdoor Tents
Outdoor tents will be returning to campus after Commencement. We will now only have two tents available for use by the Physics community as all other University-sponsored tents will no longer be offered. Once deployed, the spaces can be reserved via RoomBook or used on a first-come, first-served basis if there is no approved reservation. Tents will be placed behind Jefferson Hall on Holmes Field. Please be aware that the tents can be taken down in preparation for inclement weather with high winds due to safety concerns.
Thank you for your continued support,
Despina

Dear Physics Community,
Please join me in congratulating Ashvin Vishwanath, George Vasmer Leverett Professor of Physics, on his election to the National Academy of Sciences.
The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) is a private, nonprofit organization of the country’s leading researchers that recognizes and promotes outstanding science through election to membership; publication in its journal, PNAS; and its awards, programs, and special activities. Members are elected to the National Academy of Sciences in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Membership is a widely accepted mark of excellence in science and is considered one of the highest honors that a scientist can receive.
