Hi, all. Apparently there was some difficulty connecting to the VNC
sessions this afternoon. When using the script for the first time, you
will not yet have created a VNC password (this is defined separately from
your FAS password). As the document Quickstart.txt in the HMDC_VNC folder
generated by the script states, you need to define a VNC password in the
DOS window. You need do this only once, regardless of whether your VNC
session changes. See #5 below.
QUICK START INSTRUCTIONS
3. Enter hostname, username, and password in pop-up windows.
4. Leave DOS windows open (you may iconify them).
5. If you do not already have a vnc session password
(or you wish to change it), click on the DOS window
(titled "plink") and type in "vncpasswd", then type a
new password at the prompt.
6. Enter your VNC session password in the popup window.
Also, when you log on to "nice.fas", as the script defaults, you are
creating a new VNC session number on a (perhaps) new "ice" machine. You
should have only ONE extant VNC session TOTAL. Not 1 per ice machine, nor
10 distributed across the four machines. Choose one session (for example,
mine is ice4, session 1) and stick with it. Every time after the first
time you use the script, be sure you DO NOT log on to "nice.fas", but
instead log on to "iceX.fas", where X is your ice machine number (mine is
4, e.g.).
Finally, and critically, PLEASE kill all your extra VNC sessions. Having
more than one session open leaves you susceptible to FAS killing ALL your
sessions. It also discourages FAS from letting all of our sessions live.
Please, log on to the ice machines on which you have extra sessions, and
type at the command prompt
vncserver -kill :XX
where XX is your two-digit session number. Mine, e.g., is 01.
Please, let me know if you have any questions, and when the questions
come, I encourage those who were fully Prefreshed to try to answer them.
As mentioned Monday, the most important tool for the course is R. VNC,
Unix, and LaTeX make R easier to use and integrate into your homework.
LaTeX in particular is a great document preparation tool for all kinds of
work, quantitative and qualitative alike. Extra effort now to get
comfortable with these tools will reap dividends quickly! It's not always
easier on the learning end, but in the not-so-long run you'll be glad you
made the investment.
I'll be accessible much of this evening, and any time tomorrow (Friday) to
meet and help folks get everything squared away. Just send an email...
Cheers,
Ryan

Hi everyone,
I was definitely very interested in taking this course, but just realized
I cannot because it does not fulfill the requirements I needed. Being
overly-eager though, I had already bought two of the books--Applied
Regression Analysis and the R & S-Plus companion by Fox. I'm willing to
sell both new copies at a discount from the COOP's price. Please let me
know either by email (xiaoyugu@fas) or phone (617-872-9639) if you are
interested.
Thanks!
Xiaoyu
