New subject: gam and qqplot functions
Hi everyone,
Hope you are all having wonderful holiday breaks. I have a stats question - two
actually.
I'm having trouble getting the gam function to work (still!)- I get the same
error
everytime I do it ... that one of my elements has fewer unique covariate
combinations than the number of degrees of freedom. I have been using the
following code:
gam.out<-gam(y~s(x1) +s(x2) +...)
I have two dummy variables among my x's - should I take those out? I don't
know
what else to do.. I've made no progress on this for several days now.
Another problem is getting qqplots -
Is this the right code ?
qq.plot(lm.out, simulate=T)
if so, I don't know why it won't plot.
Any advice?! Both of these things just shouldn't be that complicated - so I
must be missing something obvious, or there must be some glitch with my R that
I need to get around. Any help will be appreciated.

New subject: latex bibliography
Hi everyone,
I hope you all are having wonderful holidays. I'm writing with a question
about using the bibilography citation links in LaTeX docs..
I have downloaded the sample.tex file from the Gov1000 website and I have
Ben ansell's samp.bib file from math prefresher that is supposed to be the
bibliography file that links into that latex document. I cannot get my
computer to pdflatex the sample.tex file so that the citations link to the
samp.bib file. I have checked, and I do have the \usepackage{natbib}
package in the header of my latex document. At the bottom of the
sample.tex file is the following:
\bibliographystyle{apsr}
\bibliography{samp}
but when I pdflatex the sample.tex document I get question marks where all
of the citations should be. I get the same when I try to link my own
paper to the .bib file I created for that - and I'm trying to diagnose the
problem. Any ideas?

Hi Suzanna,
You'll need to use the bibtex to get the citations linked. Try:
pdflatex sample
bibtex sample
pdflatex sample
pdflatex sample
This should work.

One more bibliography question - my .bib file at the moment has 2 books and an
article (as below) but when I bibtex the my paper latex document it will only
recognize the first citation. do I need to do something to divide the entries
for each? The .bib file looks (in format) like this:

Hi Suzanna,
I think you need a comma after the last item (OPTannote = {}) in the
first two entries.

Hi again..
I'm still stuck on this bibliography - I've tried making separate
.bib files for each source and entering them as
\bibliography{source1}
\bibliography{source2}
I have also tried having all of my sources one after another in one .bib
file ...
With both I pdflatex, and it is fine - then I bibtex and I get the
following text and warnings in my x terminal:
Database file #1: Source1.bib
Warning--I didn't find a database entry for "Source2"
Warning--I didn't find a database entry for "Source3"
Please help!
