(We apologize if you're receiving this email for the second time; the
Friends will have its emails consolidated into one list by this fall. In
the meantime we want to make sure we don't miss anyone.)
Hello again Harvard Football alums, Friends and fans,
Hope you're all enjoying the start of summer! Just wanted to forward news
on a couple things:
1) The Harvard Football program was well-represented last week in Japan,
where Harvard notched yet another victory over Yale. The Crimson coaching
staff and 4 alums teamed up with Japanese players to defeat a team made up
of Yale coaches/alums and Japanese players, 35-21, in the 2004 Ivy-Samurai
Bowl. The full story on the game is below.
2) The Friends of Harvard Football Golf Tournament will take place this
Monday (June 28th) at Charter Oak Country Club in Hudson, MA (11 AM
registration, 12 noon tee-off). We are happy to report that we have nearly
a full field with approximately 140 golfers signed up! We also have 14
generous sponsors at various levels so thank you to everyone who is either
playing in the tournament or supporting it in some way. If you are unable
to attend, you can still get involved by placing a bid on the auction items
that will be available on Monday. See below (underneath the Japan story)
for a complete list of auction items; you can reply to this email with a
bid before Monday.
Thanks for your support of Harvard Football!
Four Harvard Alums Lead Team Crimson To Win In Ivy-Samurai Bowl
Rose runs for four TDs as Harvard-led contingent defeats Yale-led squad
June 20, 2004, www.gocrimson.com
TOKYO -- For four former Harvard football players, it represented one last
chance to don a Crimson uniform and take on the Blue and White of Yale.
Even if it was more than 6,000 miles away. And for Neil Rose '03, Nick
Palazzo '03, Andy Fried '02 and Erik LaHaie '02, the opportunity to compete
one more time against Harvard's rival couldn't have been more rewarding.
Those four standouts of the recent past -- along with several members of
the Harvard coaching staff -- led Team Crimson to a 35-21 win against Team
Bulldogs Sunday in the 2004 Ivy-Samurai Bowl in front of 22,100 at Tokyo
National Stadium.
The teams were comprised of four players from their American
representative, with the remaining players coming from Japanese colleges
that sponsor American football. Yale was represented by 2002 graduate T.J.
Hyland and 2004 grads Steve Ehikian, and Jake Kohl.
"The trip was first class in every way," said Harvard Head Coach Tim
Murphy, who last visited Tokyo in 1997 when the Crimson played an
exhibition game against Japan's Kyoto University. "It was such a wonderful
experience for our coaches and our players."
The game itself saw Team Crimson take a 14-0 lead at the end of the first
quarter and hold a 28-7 lead in the third period before finishing with the
35-21 win.
Rose, who is Harvard's career leader in passing yards and passing
touchdowns, started at quarterback for Team Crimson and was named the
game's MVP after he rushed for 91 yards and four TDs on 19 carries. Rose
also completed 16 of 27 passes for 187 yards.
Palazzo was the game's leading rusher with 136 yards and a TD on 18
carries. Fried finished with four tackles and a fumble recovery, whle
LaHaie finished with five tackles for Team Crimson.

Hello again Harvard Football alums, Friends and fans,
We are now exactly one week away from the Friends of Harvard Football Golf
Tournament, set to take place Monday, June 28th at 12 noon (11 AM
registration) at Charter Oak Country Club in Hudson, MA. The Friends of
Football is happy to report that so far we're up to 132 registered golfers
(the max allowed by Charter Oak is 144) and we also have 11 sponsors
(complete list of golfers and sponsors is below). If you're interested in
playing but have not yet signed up, or if you have any raffle or auction
items you'd like to donate, reply to this email or call the Varsity Club at
617-495-3535.
Also, the Friends of Football would like to congratulate Alan D. Bersin '68
and Thomas F. Stephenson '64 -- both two-year football lettermen -- on
recently being elected to the Harvard Board of Overseers. From the June
17th Harvard University Gazette: A total of five new Overseers were elected
for six-year terms. The primary function of the Board of Overseers is to
encourage the University to maintain the highest attainable standards as a
place of learning. Overseers carry out this mission by visiting faculties,
departments and other important programs throughout the University in order
to identify problems and offer advice to faculties and other University
officials. Bersin currently serves as superintendent of public education
for the San Diego Unified School District. Stephenson, who in October 1994
established a $2M endowment fund that supports Harvard's head football
coach, has been a partner since 1987 in Sequoia Capital (a leading Silicon
Valley-based venture capital firm).
Thanks for your support of Harvard Football!
