Dear Harvard Men’s Swimming and Diving Alumni,
October was a productive month for the Men’s Swimming and Diving Team.
We had 31 days of strenuous training, swam our first meet of the season
and had some excellent swimmers decide that they want to attend Harvard
next year.
On Friday October 16, we traveled to Boston College for a scrimmage vs.
BC. Our swimmers were tired as they swam a full practice in the morning,
lifted weights in the afternoon and had an unusually late meet start
time of 8pm. We saw several mentally and physically tough performances
especially from our Freshmen swimmers.
The divers were also very strong, finishing 1-2-4-5 on 1 meter and
1-2-3-5 on 3 meter. Zac Ranta won both events and qualified for the NCAA
Zone Qualifying meet, and Freshman Michael Stanton and Sophomore Taylor
Nickel both had a 2nd place, with each scoring over 290 in their highest
finish. It looks to be a strong season on the boards this year.
We next raced at our Annual Intra Squad Meet on Sat October 31. Junior
Douwe Yntema, Sophomore Niall Janney and Freshmen Owen Wurzbacher had
outstanding performances. The meet came down to the last relay with the
Crimson team defeating the Black team by less than seven points.
As of November 1, eight of our top recruits have committed to attend
Harvard in the fall of 2010. We have an outstanding class of
freestylers. Next fall we will have a minimum of seven swimmers who swim
the 200 Free in 1:40 or below.
We kick off our Dual Meet season with Texas A&M on Friday November 13
followed by Cornell/Dartmouth on November 14. The Texas A&M meet will
begin at 11am. We’d love to have you attend. If you are unable, please
check gocrimson.com for results and updates.
On a final note, one of our goals is to preserve, organize and expand
the written history of Harvard Men’s Swimming and Diving. There are so
many great stories and facts about our program that should be accessible
to all. Many items are currently stored at Blodgett and we could use
your help review that material, and to add to it and help determine a
method for display. If you are interested, please contact Coach Tyrrell .
Regards,
Tim

Dear Harvard Men’s Swimming and Diving Alumni,
Thank you very much for your continued support over the years. We are
grateful for your help in continuing the Harvard Men’s Swimming and
Diving tradition and hope to live up to and exceed your expectations.
The 2009-2010 season is off to great start! Our swimmers and divers are
ready to push themselves to new levels of success with the goal of
winning the 2010 Ivy League Championship. Several events have taken
place in September that will help us move in this direction.
Captain’s practices began as soon as swimmers returned to campus and
recruiting for the Class of 2014 intensified throughout the month.
Senior Co-Captains Tommy Gray and Alex Meyer established a culture of
discipline, hard work, dedication and teamwork and brought the Freshmen
up to speed quickly.
Thirty prospective student-athletes spent a recruit weekend with our
team over the second and third weekends of September. The feedback from
all visitors was that attending Harvard is a special and unique
opportunity but what truly separates us from other teams is the sense of
friendship and trust within our team. I am sure you felt the same way
during your tenure at Harvard. We are in a good position to land a solid
and effective class of athletes. Please keep us in your thoughts.
Midnight Madness took place at the stroke of midnight on October 1, our
first official practice allowed by the Ivy League. Swimmers and divers
joined together to sing “10,000 Men of Harvard” and perfect team cheers
such as the HAKA, HIP-SAH, and others. The evening started with the
coaching staff and team members establishing the Values, Goals and
Expectations of the team. Sprint relays were swum in honor of each
teammate, each swim meet and for each swimmer/diver’s family. The
greatest round of cheers and applause was for the relay swum in honor of
the Alumni. We wish you could have been here to see it. By the 2am
finish everyone was ready to tackle the season (and go to bed). Ice
Cream was served as swimmers left Blodgett and was a big hit.
We will keep you posted as we move forward and please stay in touch with
us. We are available to answer any questions and would love to hear what
made your experience a success and special time in your lives. Our first
meet of the season is Friday November 13 vs. Texas A&M at home. We’d
love to have you attend. Please check-in with us from time to time at

In the men's race, 16-year-old Tennessean Sean Ryan earned an 11th place
finish, with a time of 5:36:22.2.
"I think I was out really well," said Ryan. "I underestimated how much
energy I was using and then on the last 2 laps, the leaders pulled away
and I just couldn't hang with them. I sort of ran out of energy. I think
it's a great learning opportunity and I'm ready to try again soon."
_*U.S. teammate Alex Meyer was poised to finish top-10, but was
disqualified rounding the final buoy*_.
The swimmers navigated through a choppy waters for more than
five-and-a-half hours. A full beach of spectators looked on in Ostia.
The crowd erupted into cheers when Italian swimmer Valerio Cleri won the
men's race in 5:26:31.6. Australia's Trent Grimsey took second in
5:26:50.7 and Russian swimmer Vladimir Dyatchin was third in 5:29:29.3.

I spoke with Alex shortly after the race this morning. He was disappointed with his disqualification while in position for a top 5 finish. Overall he felt very good about his race. This was a tremendous performance for Alex competing in his first 25K and international meet.
