Job description -- DRCLAS Brazil Studies Program Manager
*Duties & Responsibilities*
Responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the DRCLAS Brazil
Studies Program at Harvard. Engage professors from across the University’s
Schools to establish programmatic activities in Cambridge and Boston in
coordination with the Program’s Faculty Chair. Lead all logistical
planning, publicity, and execution of activities of the Brazil Studies
Program at the University. Plan the Brazil Studies Program Seminar Series,
the Lemann Fellow Seminar Series, Brazil Week, and other program events in
coordination with the Faculty Chair and the DRCLAS Events Coordinator.
Identify and develop institutional collaborators and event co-sponsors at
Harvard for Brazil-related activities. Manage the Brazil Studies Program
budget in Cambridge in coordination with the DRCLAS Finance Officer. Serve
as point person for distinguished visitors to Harvard from a variety of
disciplines. Support the faculty-driven University-wide Brazil Studies
Program which includes committee meetings, events, short courses, and other
activities that seek to enhance collaboration among Harvard faculty,
students, senior staff and their Brazilian counterparts by bringing
together the very best experts across disciplines. Represent the
organization as appropriate in internal and external fora (such as the
Lemann Dialogue, BRASA, etc.) in coordination with faculty leadership. In
coordination with the Brazil Office and student services staff in
Cambridge, assist undergraduate and graduate study-abroad and summer
internship programs in Brazil (including outreach classroom visits to
potential participants) as well as provide some assistance to student
independent research trips. Receive and advise students, faculty and other
visitors to the Brazil Studies Program and DRCLAS. Support pre-departure
orientation activities and give “Brazil 101” oral presentations. Engage
with Brazil-related student organizations across the University and help
foster continuity of organizations. Work closely with Lemann Fellows to
ensure a strong institutional foundation and ongoing network. Manage and
maintain the content of the Brazil Studies Program website in coordination
with the Brazil Office. Coordinate and staff the Brazil Studies Program’s
Faculty Advisory Committee in liaison with the program’s Faculty Chair, as
well as the Lemann Fellowship Selection Committee with the Committee on
General Scholarships and the Kenneth Maxwell Senior Thesis Prize Selection
Committee. Perform other duties as required to meet the goals and mission
of the Program. Some travel required during peak international program
months (January and June to August). Reports to the Executive Director of
the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies (DRCLAS) in
Cambridge.
*Basic Qualifications*: Bachelor's degree required. Portuguese fluency
required. Minimum of 3 years work experience.
*Additional Qualifications*: Strong organizational skills and the proven
ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously. Demonstrated
ability to work independently and to relate well with diverse
constituencies. Thorough knowledge of Harvard College academic and
administrative structure is helpful. Effective communication skills are
important, with an emphasis on writing and editing. Masters degree
preferred, as well as experience as a student or administrator in Brazilian
higher education.
