*GHP 542 – Harvard-Brazil Collaborative Public Health Field Course*
This collaborative field course is offered by the Harvard School of Public
Health (HSPH), the Medical School of the University of São Paulo, the Santa
Casa Medical School, and the Brazil Studies Program at Harvard University's
David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies (DRCLAS).
*Course Dates: January 6th - 24th, 2014*
*Location: São Paulo city, the capital of São Paulo State*
*Course format:* The course combines lectures, discussions, site visits
(hospitals, health facilities, NGOs, and community-based programs), and
group work. Five specific topics are covered in the course: HIV/AIDS,
Leishmaniasis, Dengue, Tuberculosis, and Mental Health.
*Participants:* 15 students from Harvard and 15 students from Brazil will
be selected. Professors from Harvard and faculty from several Brazilian
institutions will lecture and lead discussions.
*
Overall objectives:* Enhance participants’ abilities to:
· Critically analyze environmental and socioeconomic factors in
Brazil that are associated with a high prevalence and geographic
distribution of diseases.
· Identify population characteristics, such as nutrition status,
immunity, degree of exposure associated with disease epidemiology and the
impact of these factors on disease morbidity and mortality.
· Foster lasting academic collaborations and joint research
projects between HSPH and Brazilian participants, strengthening personal
networks throughout Brazil and internationally.
*Budget*: Expenses might vary depending on personal spending habits and the
currency exchange rate (Brazilian Reais per US dollar).
