It is with very great regret that we learned of the untimely death of Dr.
Ruth Cardoso.
Dona Ruth, as she was widely and affectionately known, was a very
distinguished anthropologist and mentor to many generations of social
scientists in Brazil and the world. She was ever discrete and low key, but
for fifty years she was a powerful presence at the cutting edge of Brazilian
academic life, politics, and an ever vigilant advocate for democracy and
human rights.
>From the beginning she encouraged and accompanied all facets of the career
of her husband, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, as he moved from precocious
scholar, to political organizer, to party founder, to President of the
Republic. In Brasilia, Done Ruth was an exemplary First Lady.
Ruth Cardoso was one of the founding members of the Advisory Group of the
Harvard Brazil Office and was a valued participant in its deliberations.
Her passion for education and equity was always evident. I had seen Dona
Ruth in many different capacities over the years, from her time managing the
research agenda of CEBRAP to her service in Brasilia and since. We will all
miss her wisdom and good counsel and we send our heartfelt condolences to
Fernando Henrique Cardoso and their family at this difficult time.

no exterior.
