Date: Tuesday, December 2, 2008
Time: 6:00 - 8:00 pm
Location: Tsai Auditorium, S-010, CGIS South, 1730 Cambridge Street,
Cambridge
A fascinating and personal account of the life and times of Carmen
Miranda, the Brazilian singer/actress who became one of Hollywood's
biggest stars. In this film, director Helena Solberg narrates the story
and attempts to come to grips with both the fascination and the anger
Carmen Miranda aroused in her countrymen. Using interviews with Carmen
Miranda’s friends and co-stars, as well as rare documentary footage and
staged fantasy numbers, Solberg explores the origins of Miranda's image
and provides a trenchant and poignant analysis of Hollywood's ethnic
stereotyping and its effect on one very talented performer.
