1. ELECTION PROTECTION
Tuesday November 2, 7-10AM and 5-8PM
Training Tomorrow (Thursday) Evening 7-8:30PM
Dudley volunteers will serve as poll monitors in a comprehensive non-partisan effort to ensure that all registered voters throughout Massachusetts may freely exercise their rights to vote. Dudley volunteers will provide information and materials about voting rights and procedures (including new identification requirements and the right to cast a provisional ballot), report possible voting irregularities, and be available to provide immediate assistance to any voters who encounter difficulties at the polls.
There will be a training for all poll monitor volunteers tomorrow (Thursday), 10/28 7-8:30PM at the Visiting Nurses Assisted Living Facility at 259 Lowell St. in Somerville. Attending this training session is REQUIRED unless you have already attended another similar training conducted by MassVOTE or the Lawyers Committee. If you cannot make the training but would still like to volunteer, please see
http://www.massvote.net/site/Survey?SURVEY_ID=1180&ACTION_REQUIRED=URI_ACTI…
to find another training time that works for you.
Everyone will sign up for volunteer shifts AT THE TRAINING. I had originally thought that Dudley volunteers would adopt a single polling location in Somerville for three shifts during Election Day and that I would be the one coordinating our shifts for that one location. I have just learned, however, that the MassVOTE people in Somerville would actually like to cover more polling locations for just the two busiest times during the day, 7-10AM and 5-8PM. This means that if we have more than four volunteers, well necessarily be volunteering at more than one polling location. So, even though I have to say I thought the idea of adopting a polling location sounded pretty neat, I think it will actually be best just for everyone to schedule themselves individually at the training according to their own availability on November 2. I still hope that it might be possible to have pairs of Dudley volunteers together.
Even though we will all be a little scattered in these morning and afternoon shifts and possibly at different polling locations, I hope all of you might like to stop by the Election Returns Party hosted by the Intellectual and Cultural Fellows in the GSL at Dudley from 8 til late. I know I will be here glued to the TV for at least part of the time and it would be fun to hear how everyones experience was at the polls.
If you intend to attend the training and to volunteer on Election Day, please email me back here and also drop a line to Alex Pirie, who is coordinating the Somerville volunteer shifts. His email is apirie(a)somervillecdc.org. Even though I wont be the one coordinating shifts and whatnot, but Id still like to just keep a record of the great work Dudley volunteers are doing.

2. PIE IN THE SKY BOX PARTY FOR COMMUNITY SERVINGS RSVP by 11/5
Saturday, November 13
9AM-12 PM (exact time and location to be confirmed, but we tentatively plan to meet on the steps of Dudley House at 8:30AM for bagels and juice)
Pie in the Sky, which has been described as The Worlds Greatest Bake Sale, is a fundraiser to benefit Community Servings, Greater Bostons free, hot, home-delivered meals program for people living with AIDS and their dependents and caregivers. Dudley volunteers will help out with this major effort by constructing the boxes that will store thousands of mouth-watering, donated pies. Please email Maria at dudleypublicservice(a)yahoo.com by November 5 if you would like to volunteer. If you would like to order a delicious Pie in the Sky pie for your familys holiday celebration (and make possible a very special Thanksgiving meal for Community Servings clients), please visit www.pieinthesky.org

3. CHILDREN DISCOVERING JUSTICE
Act as a volunteer juror for the "Discovering Justice: The James D. St. Clair Court Education Project." Watch students as they hold a mock trial in front of a state or federal judge. The event will be held at the Moakley U.S. Courthouse on Wednesday, December 15th, from 5:30-8:00 p.m. Wed like to let the program know how many volunteers well have as soon as possible, so please email Denise at dudleypublicservice(a)yahoo.com if you would be able to commit to volunteering at this event.

Way to go Team Dudley! This past Sunday, Team Dudley Striders Diana, Jeff, Sejin, Betty, Marin, Christie, Sarah, and Maria walked 5.7 miles as a team to raise $528 (with more donations still coming in) for the American Cancer Society and its lifesaving research, advocacy, and education efforts. Overall, walkers numbering 30,000 raised $3 million for the cause. It was a beautiful day and inspiring to see so many breast cancer survivors and their loved ones in the crowd. Thank you to all the walkers and everyone who contributed to our efforts. Its not too late to join Team Dudleys efforts in supporting the American Cancer Society. If you would like to contribute, please visit https://www.acsevents.org/faf/search/searchTeamPart.asp?ievent=54460&lis=1&…

6. Ongoing Opportunity: MOUNT AUBURN HOSPITAL BLOOD DONATION CENTER
Did you know that you can save up to 3 lives through just one blood donation? Because there is no substitute for human blood, donors are counted on every day to help Mount Auburn Hospital meet the needs of patients in our community. The Mount Auburn Hospital Blood Donation Center is making a plea to students at Harvard, hoping we students can donate a half hour to saving lives. Blood is needed daily at the hospital and when tragedy occurs, we can all feel safer knowing there is a sufficient blood supply on hand. You can help by donating blood regularly. The MAH Blood Donation Center would like to help you find a convenient time to donate blood at its location on the ground floor of the Wyman Building of the hospital. MAH is just a short walk away. Please consider donating such a generous giftthe gift of life. To schedule an appointment or to learn more about donating blood, please call (617) 499-5735.

Reminder for all Massachusetts voters:
The postmark deadline for REGISTERING TO VOTE in Massachusetts is TOMORROW, October 13.
If you have not already registered to vote in MA and would like to do so by mail, you may pick up a registration form from the lobby of Dudley House or from the bin on the door of the Dudley Intellectual and Cultural office on the third floor of Dudley House, across from the Dudley Library. Just drop your completed form in the mail and make sure it is postmarked October 13.
If you would like to register in person, you may do so at your city or town hall and the deadline remains tomorrow, October 13. Tomorrow, city and town halls will stay open until 8PM.
Since election offices are swamped these days, it is possible that if you have attempted to register recently (including during our drive at GSAS registration), you may not receive a confirmation of your registration before the deadline tomorrow, 10/13. If you have not yet received a confirmation, we recommend that you give a call to your local election commission during the day tomorrow to check on the status of your registration. Even if you submitted your form several weeks ago (as we submitted the forms collected at GSAS registration), if it was somehow lost, contained erroneous information, or was incomplete in certain areas, you MUST complete a new and corrected registration before the end of the day tomorrow, 10/13. If you have questions about this, please call or visit your local election office.
Here are the phone numbers for the four local election offices that serve the largest number of students here:

A group of us went last Thursday for our kick-off visit to the Harvard Square Homeless Meals program and heard a wonderful, inspiring introduction to the program from Laurie, the longstanding volunteer coordinator there. You can feel free to drop in anytime between 2:30 and 8, but keep in mind that if youre interested in serving the meal to the guests its probably best to come before 5:30 because that is when all the volunteers will get their assignments for the serving shift. Either Denise, Ernesto, or Maria will be volunteering for part of the time every Thursday, so we all look forward to seeing you there! (Clarification and correction to the information printed in the GSAS bulletin: In order to accommodate everyones busy and different schedules, from now on we will NOT be meeting at Dudley House and instead encourage
volunteers to come by the church at their convenience.)
