DESCRIPTION of SHIFTS
******************************************************
There are 4 shifts:
Dinner: 6:45 PM - 9:15 PM
Evening: 9:00 PM - 11:15 PM
Overnight: 11 PM - 9:00 AM
Breakfast: 6:30 AM - 9:00 AM
*But if it is SATURDAY morning, then it is*
[Friday] Overnight: 11 PM - 10:00 AM
[Saturday] Breakfast: 7:30 AM - 10:00 AM
BREAKFAST -- Come in bright and early to greet our guests as they begin to
wake up! You'll be making breakfast and helping to clean the shelter (an
invaluable service!) after all the guests leave at 8am.
DINNER -- You'll be making and serving dinner, and perhaps be lucky enough
to run on a food salvage trip or collect pastries from the many shops that
donate to us.
EVENING -- This is a relaxed time to visit with guests as they prepare for
bed. It's usually very quiet and a great opportunity for some wonderful
conversations. Help is also often needed in the kitchen to clean-up after
dinner and prepare plates of food to hand out at the door.
OVERNIGHT – You'll hang out with other volunteers and night-owl guests,
basically having more good conversations, watching movies, doing laundry,
reading, baking cookies, etc! This is a fantastic shift because it's a
rare opportunity to have long conversations and get to know people well.
Overnight volunteers often say it's the best shift! And never fear, we do
take turns sleeping -- the night is typically divided into three sub-shifts
and you will be asleep for two of them (there is a staff room with bunk
beds, so you will be able to sleep 5-6 hours when it is not your turn to be
awake).
*The shelter is located at 66 Winthrop Street in the basement of the
University Lutheran Church in Harvard Square (on the corner of Dunster and
Winthrop Streets, next to the MAC and Pinocchio's Pizza).

*Dudley House Graduate Student Lounge*
Here is your chance to stand up and give back to the community in your own
way.
Thanks to the generosity and community spirit of the Harvard-MIT Cooperative
Society (The COOP), Harvard graduate students have an opportunity to receive
funding for their community service projects through Dudley Public Service.
An informational session will be held at 6:30pm, Nov 3 in the Dudley House
Graduate Student Lounge. Allan Powell will introduce about the COOP grant
and the application process. Wine and Cheese will be served.
These grants will fund community service projects organized by Harvard
graduate students from GSAS or the professional schools (HLS, KSG, HMS, GSE,
etc…). We value innovation, so please do not feel limited to traditional
forms of public service. If there is a way you can extend your graduate
studies into a community service project, we would love to hear about it.
Please send us your ideas or ask questions at dudleypublicservice(a)gmail.com

Hi everyone,
Interested in getting kids excited about science? Well, you're in luck!
Dudley Public Service is teaming up this year with the Harvard ExperiMentors
in a reverse science fair (where we do cool experiments for the kids).
The event will be *December 5th from 8:30 am- 2 pm* (although you don't have
to stay the whole time) on the Harvard campus. The theme for the day is *
MythBusters*, so we'll have have a lot of freedom in planning the
experiments. If you're interested in helping out, please email
dudleypublicservice(a)gmail.com. The next planning meeting is Oct. 23rd, so
we'd like to have a grad student team together before then.
I attached some photos from previous events, and here's their website:

Should be a lot of fun -- hope you can come!
Janine

According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, there are more
than 350,000 Massachusetts children ages 0-18 living in low-income and
homeless situations. Join students from universities across the Greater
Boston area for a week of service at Cradles to Crayons and be part of an
important effort to bring donated clothing, books, toys and shoes to
children in need in the Greater Boston area. The Brighton-based non profit
Cradles to Crayons “endeavors to provide homeless and low-income children
with the essentials they require to thrive – to feel safe, warm, ready to
learn, and valued.” Volunteers inspect incoming books, match outfits,
sort and test toys, stuff backpacks, or fill orders that meet the needs of
