To all the scientifically-inclined folks who want to get involved (and to
our members in Longwood!)--
Want to donate a little bit of time and skills to science mentoring
opportunities in the area? Here are a few science-related opportunities to
those of you who might like to extend your expertise beyond the classroom
and lab!
Cheers,

*1. Mentoring Opportunity: Science Clubs at the Amigos School*
Looking for Mentors to help direct Science Clubs at the Amigos School in
Cambridge on Friday afternoons (calendar below).
The Mentors co-teach the 12 girls in the class in one subject over 8 weeks.
The curriculum is easy to follow nd everything is laid out for the Mentors
to follow. They have 30 minutes before and after each club meeting to prep,
clean and prepare for the next class. Therefore, there is no planning
needed by the Mentors between club meetings. They strive for great
attendance by the Mentors so that the girls can have consistent role models
as teachers each week.
They have clubs at Amigos for K, 1st Grade, 2/3rd graders; 4/5th graders.
So four concurrent clubs running in four classrooms throughout the school.
The clubs are free for the girls and the parents love the program - they
get a lot of repeats each semester! They have a very high demand at Amigos
and will have to turn many girls away - unfortunately they are short on
Mentors and they really really hope to not cancel any clubs.

*2. Science Olympiad at Cambridge Public Schools*
Is engineering or Science your passion? Inspire and support young
scientists at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School by joining our crew of
Science Olympiad mentors this year. Events span a wide range of scientific
domains including "Dynamic Planet," "Optics," "Circuit Lab," "Disease
Detectives," and more!
*What is the time commitment?*
The volunteer commitment is for one weekly 60-90 minute session. Science
Olympiad volunteers meet with 2 students at the school for 1.5 hours per
week in the afternoon, between 2:30 and 5:00, Monday – Friday. You will
arrange your schedule with the students. Resources are available on site
that include practice tests, event descriptions, and computers. Volunteers
may choose to assist on additional days and times.
Contact Jennifer Fries at jfries(a)cpsd.us for more information.
*3. Mentorship, Teaching, and Outreach Opportunities with HPREP *
*Are you interested in mentoring, teaching, or outreach to Boston-area high
school students? Volunteer with the Harvard Health Professions Recruitment
and Exposure Program (HPREP)! HPREP is an outreach program hosted by
Harvard to recruit high school students from underrepresented and
disadvantaged backgrounds into science, medicine, and public health. Our
goal is to use fun, hands-on lectures and labs paired with one-on-one
mentoring to give students the excitement, confidence, and role models
necessary for them to succeed in these fields. Sessions include topics like
cancer biology, infectious diseases, neuroscience, health disparities,
leadership, and more! HPREP will run on 10 Saturdays from November to
February in TMEC on the Longwood Campus. If you are interested in
mentoring students, teaching/developing lessons, labs, and workshops, or
helping with program development and coordination, we would love to have
you join our team! There are many roles to fill, some with very little time
commitment and others with more. To hear more about this program and our
AWESOME students, come to any of the following information sessions. If you
already know which teaching and mentoring or leadership roles you are
interested in, you can go ahead and fill out the application form
