Subject: Thanksgiving Break Volunteer Opportunity

Hello,
I'm wondering if you'd be willing to pass on the following volunteer
opportunity to your email list.
Thank you!

Y2Y Harvard Square
*Y2Y Harvard Square* and the *Harvard Square Homeless Shelter* need your
help.

Dear friends,
As many of you know, our youth shelters are staffed primarily by regular,
student-volunteers from Harvard and surrounding schools. But over Harvard's
Thanksgiving Break (11/22 - 11/27), the majority of our regular volunteers
are away from Cambridge. And so, during this Thanksgiving Break season, we
turn to our community members, students staying around over Thanksgiving
Break, and local residents to help staff our shelter for our guests.
So, if you are around Cambridge for any amount of time between November
22-27, we could really use your extra set of hands as a Thanksgiving Break
volunteer!
*Again, you can sign up for Thanksgiving Break shifts with Y2Y here
<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PH4gIKtH2-cnz_3IdGJPdRD1FZi-F7dvyAp…>
and/or
HSHS here
<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1K5k9HoweL_JxR9F3lFUmaFlHSshsGUlcPMK…>!*
We HIGHLY encourage you to sign up for several shifts throughout the break
if you are able. Click on the spreadsheet for instructions, and read up on
the specific shift descriptions at the bottom of this email. Anyone can
volunteer with us over Thanksgiving Break -- no shelter experience
necessary.
Again, we just want to emphasize how important your contribution will be to
us this Thanksgiving Break, and we sincerely hope that you'll have some
time to lend a hand this November. Please pass this email along to any of
your friends, family members, or co-workers that might be interested in
volunteering at our shelter over Thanksgiving Break -- we can really use
all of the hands on deck that we can get.
Thanks for everything that you all do in our community, and as always,
please don't hesitate to reach out with any thoughts or questions!
With much shelter love,
The Y2Y and HSHS Families

*DESCRIPTION of SHIFTS*
****************************************************
There are 4 shifts:
Dinner: 6:45 PM - 9:15 PM
Evening: 9:00 PM - 11:15 PM
Overnight: 11 PM - 9:00 AM
Breakfast: 6:30 AM - 9:00 AM
*But if it is SATURDAY or SUNDAY morning, then it is*
[Friday or Saturday] Overnight: 11 PM - 10:00 AM
[Saturday or Sunday] Breakfast: 7:30 AM - 10:00 AM
BREAKFAST -- Come in bright and early to greet our guests as they begin to
wake up! You'll be making breakfast and helping to clean the shelter (an
invaluable service!) after all the guests leave at 8am.
DINNER -- You'll be making and serving dinner, and perhaps be lucky enough
to run on a food salvage trip or collect pastries from the many shops that
donate to us.
EVENING -- This is a relaxed time to visit with guests as they prepare for
bed. It's usually very quiet and a great opportunity for some wonderful
conversations. Help is also often needed in the kitchen to clean-up after
dinner and prepare plates of food to hand out at the door.
OVERNIGHT -- You'll stay awake with other volunteers and night-owl guests,
basically having more good conversations, watching movies, doing laundry,
reading, baking cookies, etc! This is a fantastic shift because it's a
rare opportunity to have long conversations and get to know people well.
People often say it's the best shift! And never fear, we do take turns
sleeping -- the night is typically divided into three shifts and you will
be awake for one of them (there is a staff room with bunk beds, so you will
be able to sleep when it is not your turn to be awake).
