*[Reminder] Thanksgiving Elderly Visit is coming up in three days!*
Nov 25, 9:30am
Dudley House Steps
This Thanksgiving we will continue our tradition of teaming up with Boston's
Little Brothers/ Friends of the Elderly to visit senior citizens who would
otherwise be alone on Thanksgiving. We will meet at Dudley House at 9:30 am
the morning of Thanksgiving, November 25 before heading to a Boston area
nursing home. This is a great chance to meet fellow graduate students and to
spread happiness to others over the holiday.
RSVP is required, so please email us for more information at
dudleypublicservice(a)gmail.com<http://us.mc546.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=dudleypublicservice@gmail.com>
The Peace Corps is turning 50! We'll be celebrating this Wednesday with
returned volunteers from around the world as they share their amazing
experiences in Pakistan, Kazahkstan, Honduras, and Namibia. Come learn about
a different culture and find out how ordinary people can make big impacts.
And of course there will be drinks and desserts to celebrate.
Peace Corps Celebration
Wednesday Nov 17 at 7:00-9:30pm
Graduate Student Lounge, Dudley House
Here are two great chances to volunteer over Thanksgiving break. They're
both nice ways to help the community while spending time with other graduate
students. Contact dudleypublicservice(a)gmail.com with questions or to RSVP.

DESCRIPTION of SHIFTS
****************************************************
There are 4 shifts:
Dinner: 6:45 PM - 9:15 PM
Evening: 9:00 PM - 11:15 PM
Overnight: 11 PM - 9:00 AM
Breakfast: 6:30 AM - 9:00 AM
*But if it is SATURDAY morning, then it is*
[Friday] Overnight: 11 PM - 10:00 AM
[Saturday] Breakfast: 7:30 AM - 10:00 AM
BREAKFAST -- Come in bright and early to greet our guests as they begin to
wake up! You'll be making breakfast and helping to clean the shelter (an
invaluable service!) after all the guests leave at 8am.
DINNER -- You'll be making and serving dinner, and perhaps be lucky enough
to run on a food salvage trip or collect pastries from the many shops that
donate to us.
EVENING -- This is a relaxed time to visit with guests as they prepare for
bed. It's usually very quiet and a great opportunity for some wonderful
conversations. Help is also often needed in the kitchen to clean-up after
dinner and prepare plates of food to hand out at the door.
OVERNIGHT – You'll hang out with other volunteers and night-owl guests,
basically having more good conversations, watching movies, doing laundry,
reading, baking cookies, etc! This is a fantastic shift because it's a rare
opportunity to have long conversations and get to know people well.
Overnight volunteers often say it's the best shift! And never fear, we do
take turns sleeping -- the night is typically divided into three sub-shifts
and you will be asleep for two of them (there is a staff room with bunk
beds, so you will be able to sleep 5-6 hours when it is not your turn to be
awake).
*The shelter is located at 66 Winthrop Street in the basement of the
University Lutheran Church in Harvard Square (on the corner of Dunster and
Winthrop Streets, next to the MAC and Pinocchio's Pizza).

Hotel Rwanda Screening
Thursday, Nov 4 - 7:00-9:30pm
Graduate Student Lounge at Dudley House
Join us as we watch this powerful movie and discuss some opportunities to
take action against modern genocide and slavery.
Hotel Rwanda - Amid the holocaust of tribal fighting in Rwanda that sees the
savage butchering of hundreds of thousands of men, women and children, one
ordinary hotel manager (Oscar nominee Don Cheadle) musters the courage to
save more than 1,000 helpless refugees. Sophie Okonedo, Nick Nolte and
Joaquin Phoenix co-star in this powerful film - often described as an
African Schindler's List.
