Here is your chance to stand up and give back to the community in your own
way.
Thanks to the generosity and community spirit of the Harvard-MIT
Cooperative Society (The COOP),Harvard graduate students have an
opportunity to receive funding for their community service projects through
Dudley Public Service.
These grants will fund community service projects organized by Harvard
graduate students from GSAS or the professional schools (HLS, KSG, HMS,
GSE, etc…). We value innovation, so please do not feel limited to
traditional forms of public service. If there is a way you can extend your
graduate studies into a community service project, we would love to hear
about it.
Please send us your ideas or ask questions at dudleypublicservice(a)gmail.com

DESCRIPTION of SHIFTS
******************************
**********************
There are 4 shifts:
Dinner: 6:45 PM - 9:15 PM
Evening: 9:00 PM - 11:15 PM
Overnight: 11 PM - 9:00 AM
Breakfast: 6:30 AM - 9:00 AM
*But if it is SATURDAY morning, then it is*
[Friday] Overnight: 11 PM - 10:00 AM
[Saturday] Breakfast: 7:30 AM - 10:00 AM
BREAKFAST -- Come in bright and early to greet our guests as they begin to
wake up! You'll be making breakfast and helping to clean the shelter (an
invaluable service!) after all the guests leave at 8am.
DINNER -- You'll be making and serving dinner, and perhaps be lucky enough
to run on a food salvage trip or collect pastries from the many shops that
donate to us.
EVENING -- This is a relaxed time to visit with guests as they prepare for
bed. It's usually very quiet and a great opportunity for some wonderful
conversations. Help is also often needed in the kitchen to clean-up after
dinner and prepare plates of food to hand out at the door.
OVERNIGHT – You'll hang out with other volunteers and night-owl guests,
basically having more good conversations, watching movies, doing laundry,
reading, baking cookies, etc! This is a fantastic shift because it's a
rare opportunity to have long conversations and get to know people well.
Overnight volunteers often say it's the best shift! And never fear, we do
take turns sleeping -- the night is typically divided into three sub-shifts
and you will be asleep for two of them (there is a staff room with bunk
beds, so you will be able to sleep 5-6 hours when it is not your turn to be
awake).
*The shelter is located at 66 Winthrop Street in the basement of the
University Lutheran Church in Harvard Square (on the corner of Dunster and
Winthrop Streets, next to the MAC and Pinocchio's Pizza).
Hello everyone,
Dudley Public Service is holding a toy drive for ABCD (Action for Boston
Community Development, inc.), and we need your help. If you're interested
in giving to the community this holiday season, please consider donating.
We're accepting unwrapped gifts for kids ages 4-16.
Some gift ideas: kids' books from the COOP, gift cards to Target or J.P.
Licks, board games from Games People Play (on Mass Ave), gifts from Black
Ink (on Brattle St)
We're accepting donations through lunchtime on 12/1 (this Thurs) -- please
drop off gifts to the offices on the third floor of Dudley during business
hours. After business hours in the evening, you may leave them with the
guard by the dining hall.
Thanks, and happy holidays!
Your public service fellows,
Janine and Xiaolu

Are you interested in sharing and giving thanks in a day of interfaith
community service and dialogue?
The Harvard Interfaith Collaborative is hosting a food packaging event on
Sunday, November 20th—the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Following the
enormous success of this year’s 9/11 interfaith community service project,
organized by the Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard, where more than 9,110
nutritious meals were packaged for food-insecure children, we hope to
double that effort by packaging 20,000 meals to distribute during
Thanksgiving week through the Kids Care program at Outreach and the
Humanist Chaplaincy's new "Values in Action" Initiative. In addition, the
event will include refreshments and facilitated dialogue on what motivates
people of different faith and philosophical convictions to engage in
service work.
Who: You! (open to the public)
What: Meal packaging service project for Kids Care
Where: Student Organization Center at Hilles (SOCH) @ Radcliffe Quadrangle,
Harvard University
When: Noon–4:00pm, Sunday, November 20, 2011
Why: Celebrate Thanksgiving by giving to the community!
Interested in donating to support this event? ChipIn! (All donations go
directly to pay for the food supplies.)
