Here are two great ways to combine an interest in science with a commitment
to public service. Science in the News and The Science Club for Girls make
important contributions to the Boston/Cambridge community and are looking
for new volunteers.
*Science** in the **News** (SITN)* is a graduate student organization at
Harvard whose goal is to increase scientific literacy and awareness. Since
our founding in 1999, we have grown to offer year-round programs, including
our fall lecture series, the SITN Flash (our biweekly e-newsletter),
Scienceby the Pint (our
science cafe series), school outreach programs, and science communication
training for our members. There are many ways to get involved in SITN
and share your enthusiasm for science with others, whether it be writing for
the SITN Flash, advertising for our lectures, participating in a program at
a local school, or helping with website development. SITN seeks volunteers
from all disciplines to sustain our programs. Check us out (
http://sitn.hms.harvard.edu) and contact us (sitnboston(a)gmail.com) to get
involved.
*Science Club for Girls:*
Are you a female studying science, engineering or math? Do you enjoy
working with children and shaping minds? Do you want to make a difference
in the lives of young girls? Then volunteer with Science Club for Girls!
Science Club for Girls is a unique 10 week afterschool based program that
recently received a 2010 MetLife Afterschool Innovator Award! We work with
girls in grades K -7, exposing them to the wonders of science in a fun,
hands-on way. Led by female volunteers, our girls have the chance to be
positively influenced by women who are already in science or studying to
have a career in science, engineering, math or technology. Your presence
allows these girls to see that they too can become strong women who can
pursue these careers. We are seeking bright, energetic women to serve as
Science Club Mentors who will help show young girls that science, math and
engineering can be fun! We provide all training, curriculum, materials and
even snacks, so that you and your clubs can be successful.
You can volunteer for as little as 2 hours per week and we are currently
looking for volunteers on the following days/times:
Cambridge:
Tuesdays, 3:00-4:15 p.m.
Thursdays, 2:30-3:45pm
Boston:
Wednesdays, 5:00-6:00 p.m.

*2010 COOP Grant Info Session*
*Thursday, Oct 7 7:30-9:00pm*
*Dudley House Common Room*
Here is your chance to stand up and give back to the community in your own
way.
Thanks to the generosity and community spirit of the Harvard-MIT Cooperative
Society (The COOP), Harvard graduate students have an opportunity to receive
funding for their community service projects through Dudley Public Service.
An informational session will be held at *7:30pm, this Thursday, Oct 7 in
the Dudley House Common Room*. Past winners will present their work and we
will be available to help you get started on your grants. *Food and
Refreshments will be served*.
These grants will fund community service projects organized
by Harvard graduate students from GSAS or the professional schools (HLS,
KSG, HMS, GSE, etc…). We value innovation, so please do not feel limited to
traditional forms of public service. If there is a way you can extend your
graduate studies into a community service project, we would love to hear
about it.
Please send us your ideas or ask questions at dudleypublicservice(a)gmail.com
