Hello everyone,
Just want to let you know about a service opportunity for
bilingual/multilingual students.
Thanks,
Janine
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello Xiaolu and Janine,
My name is Johane and I am a part of the Language Access Team in the Office
of Civil Rights at Boston Housing Authority(BHA). One of our initiatives is
the Volunteer Interpreters Program(VIP), through which we encourage
community members to volunteer their language skillls to interpret for low
income and immigrant families going through the housing process.
We are currently seeking bilingual and multilingual students who speak
Chinese, Vietnamese, Khmer, Somali, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, Cape
Verdean, Spanish, Albanian, Russian, Arabic, French (and other languages) to
participate in our Volunteer Interpreters Program. It would be a great way
for students to supplement their academic studies, and to impact social
change by working directly with homeless, limited English proficient
families in the Boston area.
I've attached our packet info, flyer and application. Please feel free to
forward, print, and share these documents with your students and staff. Also
feel free to contact me with any questions.
Thank you and we look forward to the possibility of working with some
members of Harvard Dudley House.

*Subject*: Volunteer Opportunities for Dudley House Students
Cambridge School Volunteers (CSV) is looking for volunteers who can make a
one or two hour per week commitment for the fall semester in a Cambridge
Public School. Volunteer at one of 12 elementary schools providing early
grade literacy or math
tutoring, classroom assistance, early-grade book publishing, or after-school
homework support. At the high school, Cambridge Rindge & Latin School
(CRLS), near Harvard Yard, opportunities include: one-to-one tutoring in
almost any subject before,
during or after school, classroom assistance, college planning and essay
writing help, and Science Olympiad advising. Please join CSV for its
kick-off event for prospective volunteers on Tuesday, September 27, from
5:30-7:30 pm in the CRLS Library.
You must register for the event. Or, check the website for upcoming
orientation dates starting in October. All schools accessible via walking or
public transportation. Contact CSV at csv(a)cpsd.us, 617-349-6794, or
www.csvinc.org to register for an
orientation.
We would be delighted to have you put our agency onto your fall 2012 public
service fair list.
Thanks again,
Martha

*Subject*: Smart Move* volunteer tutoring program
For the last five years, Harvard volunteers have been making a difference in
the lives of at risk 7th and 8th grade students at the Graham and Parks
Alternative School. In this one-on-one academic mentorship program you will
find flexibility, convenience, and meaningful connections with students. The
program takes place at the Graham and Parks School on Linnaean Street (near
the Radcliffe Quad). Available time slots are Mondays, Wednesdays, and
Thursdays from 2:45pm to 4:15pm. Minimum time commitment is 35 hours for the
duration of the school year (October through May). If you are interested in
making a worthwhile contribution of your time, please contact
Andrew.Magliozzi(a)gmail.com for more details.
*Smart Move is a student-named organization with tutors, supplies, and
resources provided by Cambridge School Volunteers and Veritas Tutors.
