Hi everyone,
Please see the message below about some great opportunities to do science
outreach. Thanks!

>>>OUTREACH: SET IN THE CITY
Satuday, April 28th
Harvard, Cambridge campus
The 4th annual "SET (Science, Engineering, Technology) in the City - A Day
of
Career Exploration for High School Girls" will take place on Saturday,
April 28th,
2012. Approximately 200 high school girls will be coming to the BU
Photonics
Center that day for talks and a Science Information Bazaar before traveling
to
other venues for lunch and activities, and finally to the Museum of Science
where the program will end with an OMNI show.****
** **
I hope you'll consider volunteering at the event. We need help for the
following –****
1. A group of women graduate students to lead a 1-hour hands-on activity
at
Harvard from 1-2 pm. We have several activities but need activity leaders
who
can do a short presentation and lead the hands-on activities. Contact
hollar(a)seas.harvard.edu if you are interested.****
2. Host a table at the Science Information Bazaar that will take place
from
10:30-11:30 AM in the Photonics Center at Boston University. Tables will be
set up in the first and second floor rotunda areas and we invite you to
bring in
some demo, exhibit, poster or computer application to share with the
girls.
In past years, volunteers have made "elephant toothpaste" and bottle
rockets
with the students, brought in sea urchins, Van der Graaf generators and
ultrasound machines. Other tables have offered students the opportunities
to explore cool nano materials and experiment with Snap Circuits or Mobius
bands. This is a wonderful opportunity to interact with girls in high
school and
share your enthusiasm for what you do.****
3. Have lunch at Harvard with the girls from noon – 1 pm.****
This event is sponsored by the Boston Area Girls STEM Collaborative, which
includes representatives from the following organizations and institutions:
Boston University, Emmanuel College, Girls Scouts of Eastern MA,
Harvard University, Boston Museum of Science, Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, Northeastern University, Science Club for Girls, Simmons
College,
TechBoston, UMass Boston, Wentworth Institute of Technology and WGBH.****

>>>OUTREACH: CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL PROJECTS
Friday, May 25th, 9am-1pm
On May 25, from 9-1 pm, SEAS will host the entire Cambridge 8th grade (400
students)
as they present their science and engineering projects and tour Harvard
labs. We need
many volunteers for May 25, and also to visit schools for a half-day prior
to May 25 to
give students feedback and advice on their projects. This opportunity is a
great way
to reach students at a crucial stage in their education.
For more information, please email outreach(a)seas.harvard.edu. To sign up,
and for more information, please visit
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/W8NYY8S.

*Easter and Passover, 2012
*
*Volunteer Help Urgently Needed!*
Easter/Passover weekend is quickly approaching, and we are still in great
need of volunteer assistance to help us with our holiday program on Sunday,
April 8th.
As it currently stands, we simply do not have the volunteer resources to
provide lifts and deliver meals to all of our elders who are in need of our
support on the holidays. If you are willing and able to participate, we
could really use your help. Every single volunteer that comes forward makes
a significant difference!
*If you have not already confirmed via telephone or email, please respond
to this message *and let me know if you will be available anytime between
10am and noon on April 8th to deliver meals and visit with elders, or if
you could provide transportation for guests of our Easter luncheon, which
runs from noon to 2pm.
We appreciate all that you do and look forward to volunteering with you
on Easter Sunday, April 8th!
Best,
Scott Berry
