*Cheyenne River Youth Project Spring Break Trip 2011 - Eagle Butte, South
Dakota, March 12-20 *
*SERVE IN SOLIDARITY *Ziebach County in South Dakota is ranked as the
poorest county in the U.S. It falls almost entirely within the Cheyenne
River Indian Reservation, home to the Cheyenne River Lakota Nation. The
reservation was created in 1889 by the U.S. Government following the Indian
Wars of the 1870's. Multiple failures to respect treaty laws and multiple
levels of structural violence over more than a century has left the Lakota
Nations living in some of the poorest counties in the U.S. Though plagued
by poverty, high rates of alcoholism, and crime, organizations like the
Cheyenne River Youth Project stand in solidarity with these communities who
are often forgotten or ignored in the wider public.
The Cheyenne River Youth Project® (CRYP), established in 1988, has become an
essential youth and family services organization, integral to the Cheyenne
River Reservation’s support system, in Eagle Butte, South Dakota. The
organization has become vital not only because they provide innovative youth
programming and family services, but also because they are a grassroots
initiative tailored to meet the needs of our community. With over 369 family
memberships reservation wide, CRYP represents local problem solving for
critical community concerns.
Join us in working with CRYP to stand in solidarity with the Lakota people
and in turn are enriched as we learn about Lakota culture and history!

Last year, a group of us went down to New Orleans and it was an incredible
experience and it's what motivated me to become president of the Humanist
Graduate Community last year. Whether your interested in learning more
about the trip or about Humanism in general, feel free to send me any
questions and I hope you come!

Come join CityServe!
CityServe is an after school program located right here on Harvard's campus
and at the nearby Jackson Mann Middle School! CityServe's unique approach to
mentoring combines tennis and academic tutoring to provide Boston middle
school students with a safe, dynamic after-school experience. You don't need
to know how to play tennis to participate - we need tutors in both tennis
and literacy. Become a mentor to young kids either on the court or in the
classroom, with a minimum commitment of only 1.5 hours a week. Sessions are
on Monday (Harvard), Tuesday (Jackson Mann), and Thursday (Jackson Mann)
afternoons from 2-5pm.
Please contact Winnie Liu (wjliu@fas) or Jason Kleban (jkleban@fas) if you
are interested in joining our organization and/or would like to check out
our program one afternoon!
