Hello,
We'd just like to be sure everyone knows that we will NOT be having our Serve and Grow Volunteer Day at the Food Project this Saturday. Many apologies if you were hoping to come!
Thanks for your understanding,
Maria

Hi Dudley Volunteers,
Here at Dudley Public Service we love to be able to let you know about extraordinary volunteer activities that fellow Dudley students are committed to! I was just talking with our Dudley Intellectual/Cultural Fellow Yao Chen after she had donated 10 inches of her hair to an amazing charity called Locks of Love that makes custom hairpieces for children who have lost their hair. Locks of Love makes these hairpieces (which would ordinarily cost $3,000-$6,000 on the market) available to children for free in order to help children feel confident that they look their best despite struggling with serious illnesses. Three participating salons in the Boston and Cambridge area will provide complimentary haircuts for Locks of Love Donors. If you're interested in getting a cool new look for summer and might be able to donate 10 or more inches of hair, please keep Locks of Love in mind. All the information you need about the donation process is on the Locks of Love website at

Hi Maria,
Here is the web site for Locks of Love (http://www.locksoflove.org/). If you plan to send something out to the Dudley list, the basic information is that the hair needs to be 10' minimum and cut in ponytail or braid. They can have a free blunt haircut at one of three salons in Cambridge and Boston, and can also have it cut anywhere and send it by mail.
Thanks, and have a nice day!
Yao

Subject: students: URGENT: Leftover Crimson Cash for Darfur
Hey Folks,
This is a quick and painless way for you to help Darfur. If you don't want to read all this email, please at least go to
www.harvardinvest.com
and decide if you want to sign the petition from there. For this to influence the relevant people we need your signatures on there before 2PM Wednesday (that's tomorrow).
Here are the details:
Each year, roughly $30K of students' money is left on their BoardPlus (undergrads) and Crimson Cash (grads) accounts as they head off for summer, and this money is considered forfeited after 29th May.
Harvard has set us a challenge: If Darfur Action Group can show them (by our 2PM meeting with them this Wednesday!) that the Harvard body cares about Darfur, then they will agree to set up a system so that students can 'swipe for Darfur'. i.e. Rather than buying that extra piece of pizza you didn't really want, or just forfeiting your remaining credit, you can swipe part or all of your remaining balance to be donated to the Genocide Intervention Fund, which is supporting African Union peacekeepers who are the only people on the ground protecting civillians in Darfur (www.genocideinterventionfund.org).
We are getting letters from student orgs and faculty, but most importantly we need student signatures on our petition. If you sign you are not agreeing to donate any of your money, but merely agreeing that students should have the option to donate if they choose to do so. Thus, it is an 'opt in' system - so if you don't want your money to go to Darfur and you just leave a balance on your card at the end of semester, it will just be forfeited as normal.
Many thanks for your support

The GSAS American Culture Society, Your Dudley House Public Services Fellows, and Harvard Friends of Amnesty International are proud to welcome Kevin Bales to campus.
KEVIN BALES, Professor, Writer, and President of Free the Slaves, will talk about contemporary slavery and global capitalism.
WEDNESDAY, May 4, at 1.30pm. Refreshments will be served.
Parlor Room, Phillip Brooks House (in the northeast corner of the Yard, inside the gates and opposite the Science Center)
Free the Slaves is the American sister organization of Anti-Slavery International. Bales wrote a hugely influential book called Disposable People which describes modern slavery as a global phenomenon and investigates how it exists in five countries, including America. It is award-winning and lifts the lid on slavery's continuing role today. Desmond Tutu calls the book "A well-researched, scholarly and deeply disturbing expos of modern-day slavery with well-thought-out strategies for what to do to combat this scourge. None of us is allowed the luxury of imagined impotence. We can do something about it."
