Dear Volunteers,
We are introducing a wonderful volunteer opportunity to you to participate
in the Harvard Opening Days and interact with Harvard undergraduate
students (freshmen, specifically). It is a short-notice, for the event
takes place on this Saturday and needs RSVP as soon as possible.
Nevertheless, do not miss the chance if you are interested! You just need to
fill out the application and respond to Robert Julien (cc'ed -
rjulien(a)fas.harvard.edu). Here are the details for the event:
"As you know, Opening Days includes an exciting new public service
opportunity for the freshman class. *The Class of 2019 Day of Service
<http://publicservice.fas.harvard.edu/freshman-day-service> *will take
place on* Saturday, September 5, from 10 am to 5 pm. *This Day of Service
will send a clear message to entering students that they are now citizens
of Cambridge and Boston and that service to society is an expectation at
Harvard College. Our hope, and expectation, is that this Day of Service
will motivate more students to get involved in our vital student-led public
service programs.
I'm writing to encourage you to serve in a leadership role for this new
initiative. We will have 15 service teams of approximately 25-30 first year
students, and want each team to have a proven Student Service Team Leader
and Staff Service Team Leader. If you are able and willing, your
responsibilities in this role would be as follows:
- Attend a logistics meeting on Wednesday, September 2, from 4 to 5 pm
in the Phillips Brooks House Parlor Room. A make-up session will take place
on Friday, Sept. 4, from 2-3 p.m.
- Participate in the Class of 2019 Day of Service on Saturday, September
5. Team leaders will meet in the Phillips Brooks House Parlor Room at *9
a.m*. for a final briefing and to receive supplies. At 10 a.m., students
will arrive for welcoming remarks by Dean Khurana, Boston City Councilor
Tito Jackson, and Cambridge City Councilor Denise Simmons prior to
departing to service sites. Lunch and will be provided. You will return to
campus by *5 p.m*.
- Become familiar with the service project in advance and lead the team
of students in making a contribution to the community.
- Lead a provided reflection for students towards the conclusion of the
service project.
This is an important new effort. Your participation would help make it a
success. We will handle the logistics, but need our best folks helping to
lead these service teams. If you are able and willing, please use this short
google form
