Application Deadline: February 12, 2012
For our third annual Spring Break Service Trip, the Humanist Graduate
Community at Harvard (HGCH) will be traveling to LA to work with the Trevor
Project (http://www.thetrevorproject.org/) and other groups that support
LGBT youth in crisis. A disproportionate number of homeless youth comprise
gay and lesbian teens who are kicked out of their homes after coming out [
http://articles.latimes.com/2010/dec/12/local/la-me-gay-homeless-20101212].
Bullying and other pressures have pushed some LGBT youth to take their own
lives. Groups, such as the Trevor Project, have made it their mission to
support LGBT youth and we will be learning about the challenges they face
and working to support them this spring break. Time permitting, we will
also get a chance to explore LA and meet with some Humanist organizations
in the area. We hope you will join us!
Background on the Humanist Graduate Community at Harvard: The HGHC provides
a community for the atheist, agnostic, skeptic, and Humanist students in
the Harvard Graduate Schools. We hold regular gatherings to discuss issues
of the day, debate ethics, play Apples to Apples, and watch movies. We also
work with the Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard to do community service and
bring speakers of interest to campus.
Participants program and food costs will be about $100 for the week
(excluding airfare). Round trip tickets to LA are around $300-350. The HGCH
will help interested participants set up fund-raising to further reduce
costs.
*Applications:* We've put together a short application form to help us in
the event that there are more students than we can accommodate. It won't
take more than a few minutes: Click here to
apply.<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?hl=en_US&formkey=dE1JN1psbGx3Q…>The
application deadlins is February 12.
*Eligibility: *The trip is open to all Harvard graduate students from any
of the schools. Whether you've come to several HGCH events or are hearing
about us for the first time, we'd love to have you join us! You don't have
to call yourself a Humanist as long as you are comfortable hanging out for
a week with several Humanists.
If you have any questions at all, please contact HGCH President A.J. Kumar
at HGC.Harvard(a)gmail.com. Info about the HGCH and updates will be available
at: harvardhumanist.org/harvard/humanist-graduate-community/
