Dudley Public Service invites you to join us for our
Homeless Meals Program Kick Off Visit
Thursday, September 30
Meet on the Dudley Steps at 4:30 PM
To kick off our year of regular volunteering at the Harvard Square Homeless Meals Program, we'll walk together to Christ Church (0 Garden Street) and have a brief orientation to the program, its mission, and the people it serves before rolling up our sleeves and helping with cooking, serving, and cleaning up. Don't worry if you can't make this orientation--new volunteers are welcome to drop in anytime on Thursdays from 2:30 to 8PM. Whether you have an hour or an entire afternoon to give, your help makes a difference to people in need!

4. HEPATITIS B INITIATIVE
If you are interested in public health and community service, join the Hepatitis
B Initiative! We are currently recruiting volunteers for the 2004-2005 academic
year. One of the greatest public health problems facing Asian Americans,
Hepatitis B can lead to liver failure, liver cancer, and even death. Chronic
hepatitis B afflicts 1 out of 10 Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Though
hepatitis B is completely preventable with a vaccine, underserved Immigrant
populations often do not receive the information and the vaccinations that can
save their lives. If you are interested in working with the underserved, in
public health, in teaching and outreach, in bridging cultural gaps, or in
clinical experience, then the Hepatitis B Initiative wants you! Cantonese,
Mandarin, Vietnamese, and Korean language skills are valued but not
required-we can use anybody with a passion for service.
What we do: Hep BI is a 7-year-old student-run organization that aims to
mobilize students to help communities prevent hepatitis B and its consequences
among at-risk groups, particularly Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders
(AAPIs). We specifically target adults and new immigrants who have not yet
received the hepatitis B vaccinations. Most have very limited English skills,
speaking primarily Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese or Korean.
HBI accomplishes its mission by (1) developing culturally and linguistically
appropriate outreach materials on hepatitis B, (2) collaborating with existing
community resources to launch educational campaigns, and (3) providing free
screenings and vaccinations. Our volunteers are undergraduate, graduate, public
health, and medical students from the Boston area, including Harvard, BU, Tufts,
MIT, Brandeis and Wellesley. Interested? Please email Christie Hershey:
hershey(a)fas.harvard.edu for more information.
